Chapter_48
When Weston and Guinevere entered the baby’s room, the nanny was in the process of changing Zack’s diaper. Weston stopped just outside the door, lingering in the hallway. He didn’t seem to want to enter the room.
Guinevere didn’t notice his strange behavior and walked right in, eager to see her son. Though Zack was still very young, some of his features already resembled the Ford family men.
After finishing the diaper change, the nanny picked up Zack from the cradle and walked over to Guinevere. “Ms. Cohen, would you like to hold him?” she asked with a gentle smile.
A flash of irritation passed over Guinevere’s face, but she bit her tongue, mindful that Weston was still standing outside. “Let me,” she said, taking the baby from the nanny’s arms.
However, the moment Guinevere held Zack, his eyes snapped open. He stared at her wide-eyed for a few seconds before bursting into loud, heart-wrenching cries. He raised his tiny fists and began flailing them clumsily, his face turning red with tears. He was clearly resisting her with all his might.
Guinevere froze, unsure of what to do. She held Zack stiffly in her arms, trying to comfort him. “Hush, baby, don’t cry…” she murmured softly.
But the more she tried to soothe him, the louder Zack wailed, his breathing becoming increasingly shallow. Guinevere’s attempts to calm him seemed to only make it worse. Feeling helpless, she had no choice but to return the baby to the nanny.
The nanny quickly took Zack back and began gently patting his back. “My little young master, don’t cry, don’t cry…” she cooed, and slowly, the baby calmed down. His tiny tears still hung at the corners of his eyes, his pitiful expression tugging at the nanny’s heart.
Guinevere stood there, her lips pursed, her emotions hard to read. Despite the discomfort brewing inside her, she remained silent.
This was the child she had carried for ten months. But after facing complications during childbirth and a period of poor health afterward, she hadn’t spent much time with Zack. With all the hired help around her, she rarely held the baby herself. By the time she recovered, Zack had started to show signs of fear toward strangers, and it was clear that she was not exempt from that.
As an actress, Guinevere had always been aware that she would eventually return to showbiz. Regaining her figure had become a priority, and she hadn’t breastfed Zack. Although the family had money to spare, with a team of nutritionists ensuring Zack’s proper growth, it hadn’t been enough to compensate for the emotional distance between them.
Guinevere glanced at Weston, still standing by the door. “Do you want to hold him?” she asked quietly.
Weston, who had been watching the scene unfold, didn’t seem angry, but neither was he particularly eager. “Must you insist on making him cry?” he asked, his voice mild but without much warmth.
He had carried Zack a few times, and when he did, he was patient, but that was about it. For someone like Weston, whose family had everything at their disposal, including an army of professional help, there wasn’t much need to get involved in the hands-on aspects of parenting. But even so, Zack was his son. It seemed impossible for Weston to completely ignore him.
The two of them stood there in the baby’s room for a moment longer before deciding to leave. Perhaps it was because the baby’s cries had echoed through the house, disturbing the rest of the household, but as they exited, they ran into Whitney.
Whitney was known for her strict bedtime routine, and it was well past the time she should have been asleep. Despite being woken up by the baby’s crying, she still looked graceful in her silk nightgown, her appearance timeless.
“Why are you two back so late?” Whitney asked, her voice calm but curious.
“We had some business in Freemont City, and the traffic was heavy on the way back,” Weston answered, his tone neutral.
Whitney nodded and then inquired, “Why did Zack cry so loudly just now?”
Weston didn’t respond.
Guinevere felt the heat of her embarrassment rising and replied awkwardly, “I missed him. I hadn’t seen him for a few days. I just wanted to hold him, but I didn’t expect him to cry so much…”
