Chapter_17
Maisy’s heart skipped a beat as she realized what had just happened. She hadn’t anticipated that Jeffrey would actually go ahead and check the credit card records. She had been so focused on manipulating the situation, thinking her parents would just take her side, that she hadn’t considered the possibility of them actually uncovering the truth.
She tried to maintain a neutral expression, but inside, she was beginning to panic. If Skylar’s card wasn’t being used, that meant Skylar had been telling the truth. And if her parents knew she had lied, it would only make things worse for her.
Jeffrey’s face grew more puzzled. “Are you sure about this? There must be some mistake. I’ve been using that card for the past few months to give her support. Are you sure you checked the correct account?”
The assistant hesitated on the other end of the line, clearly unsure. “Yes, Mr. Williams, I double-checked the records. There are absolutely no transactions associated with the supplementary card. The primary account is intact, but nothing from the supplementary card.”
Sadie’s face turned pale as she processed the news. “That can’t be right,” she muttered under her breath. “How could she do this? She’s making a fool of us in front of everyone…”
Kenny seethed with frustration, “She’s lying, Dad. She’s trying to turn the tables on us. I don’t care what the records say; she’s definitely been using that card.”
Jeffrey slammed his hand on the table in anger, “I don’t care what anyone says, I need to get to the bottom of this!”
Maisy, trying to regain control of the situation, quickly interjected, “Maybe Skylar did use it somewhere that wasn’t recorded. Or she might’ve paid off the balance quickly to hide the trace. You know she’s always been tricky.”
Sadie eyed Maisy with a raised eyebrow, clearly seeing through her attempt to shift the blame. “We don’t know that for sure,” she said in a tense voice, turning her gaze back to Jeffrey. “We need to figure this out.”
But Maisy wasn’t finished. She glanced at her parents and then turned toward Kenny, trying to make herself seem like the helpful daughter. “What if we send someone to find out where Skylar’s really been living? Maybe she’s been hiding things from us.”
Her words hit a nerve with Sadie, who quickly agreed. “That’s right. We should figure out where she’s been staying. If she’s hiding things, we’ll make sure everyone knows it. No one embarrasses us like this!”
Kenny, still angry, picked up his phone to make some calls. “I’ll get someone on it right now. She won’t get away with this.”
Maisy, however, was only half-listening. Her mind was racing with thoughts of how to cover her tracks before her own lies came to light. What if Skylar really wasn’t using the card? What would that mean for her own actions?
As her family continued to fume, Maisy couldn’t help but feel a flicker of doubt creep into her thoughts. Could Skylar actually be innocent this time? Or was Maisy just too tangled up in her own web of lies to see it?
At the same time, Skylar, still stuck in traffic and frustrated by the call with Kenny, had no idea the storm that was brewing back at the Williams Residence. All she could focus on was getting home and finding some peace after a long day of work. But deep down, she knew this family drama wasn’t over—it was just beginning. And with each passing moment, the stakes seemed to get higher.
