Chapter_43
“I have dating experience, and I know that the calmer someone looks, the more miserable they feel deep down,” Caleb remarked casually.
Daniel, who had been listening, sighed. “I used to think youngsters made no sense whenever I heard you talk back then. But now it feels like you’re actually making some sense. Just be careful these next few days. Don’t bother Skylar, alright?”
Caleb rolled his eyes at Daniel, brushing off the concern. “It’s actually trendy for women to date younger guys now. I happen to be the type of pretty boy that older women tend to like. Who knows? Maybe Skylar might fall for it right away.”
“Get out of here!” Daniel retorted, shaking his head.
Meanwhile, at Martin Group’s CEO office, Paul hurried in, holding a phone and a packed document. “Mr. Martin, have you seen Ms. Sullivan’s post on social media?” he asked, a little out of breath.
Joe glanced up at Paul, his frosty gaze piercing. “It’s working hours now.”
“I know, Mr. Martin, but you need to see this. I’ve uncovered the relationship between Ms. Sullivan and Christopher. You really should take a look at her post,” Paul pressed, noticing the sharp edge in Joe’s eyes. It was the kind of stare that could kill if looks could do that.
With a sigh, Joe grabbed his phone, which he had left aside. He opened Instagram and began scrolling. His expression soured when he saw Skylar’s post, the warmth completely evaporating from his face.
“Seems like Ms. Sullivan really broke up with Christopher,” Paul continued, analyzing the situation as he showed Joe a screenshot from his chat with a private investigator. “She went to the police station and hired a lawyer. Apparently, Christopher swindled money from her, and the police even paid him a visit at his workplace.”
Joe’s frown deepened as Paul spoke, the words “30th of last month” catching his attention. That was the day Joe and Skylar had registered their marriage. He glanced at Paul, but the man’s analysis didn’t seem to make much of an impression on him.
Without responding, Joe tossed his phone aside. “Reorganize my schedule. I’m heading to the hospital at 3:00 pm,” he said dismissively.
Paul hesitated for a moment, unsure what to make of Joe’s reaction, but quickly went off to adjust the schedule.
Back at the Williams residence, chaos was unfolding.
“What is the meaning of this, Maisy?” Sadie demanded, clutching her phone so tightly that her fingers were visibly trembling. She was in shock. She had just found out that Maisy had been seeing Skylar’s boyfriend in secret.
Kenny, the oldest of the Williams brothers, along with his younger siblings Samuel and Peter, had just returned home. The three brothers hadn’t paid much attention to Skylar in the past—they had grown up in a different household, and there had never been much of a bond. In their minds, Skylar had never mattered as much as Maisy did.
But even though they weren’t close to Skylar, seeing Maisy’s secretive actions still angered them. They’d seen the post on social media while on their way home, and it had stirred something in them.
Kenny was the first to speak. “What is this, Maisy? Why would you do something like that?”
Maisy, feeling cornered, clenched her phone tighter. Her heart pounded as she realized the gravity of the situation. Despite her anger, she knew she had to put on an act. She forced a few tears into her eyes and spoke softly. “That’s photoshopped. Skylar did it on purpose to drag my reputation through the mud.”
Her words barely covered the rage she felt inside, but she had no choice but to spin the narrative her way, hoping it would buy her some time before the situation spiraled any further.
