Chapter_85
Maisy’s fingers trembled slightly as she sent the message to Christopher. Her eyes narrowed in a mix of frustration and resentment, the image of Skylar’s cold demeanor lingering in her mind. The sudden shift in Skylar’s attitude, the way she so easily dismissed Jeffrey and Maisy—it infuriated her. It was as if Skylar had completely abandoned the family, and now, with her relationship with Mr. Ziegler, it seemed like she had crossed a line.
But that was exactly what Skylar wanted, wasn’t it? She wanted to break free, to reject them, and Maisy couldn’t stand it. The thought of Skylar being with someone like Ziegler, someone who could elevate her status beyond anything the Williams family could provide, stung. Maisy had always been the one with the charm, the looks, the connections—but now, Skylar seemed to have everything Maisy couldn’t touch.
Jeffrey stood still for a moment, his eyes scanning the area as if trying to figure out how things had gotten so out of control. The tension in the air was thick, and his temper flared at the thought of Skylar so openly rejecting him. He clenched his fists, but then his phone buzzed—Maisy’s message to Christopher.
He read it quickly and shoved his phone back into his pocket, trying to hold onto whatever semblance of authority he still had. “We’ll deal with her later,” he muttered. But even as he said it, the doubt lingered in his mind. What had Skylar been hiding? What was this connection with Ziegler?
Maisy, still fuming, caught up with him. “She’s playing a dangerous game,” she hissed. “Skylar doesn’t realize who she’s messing with. If she thinks she can get away from us, she’s wrong.”
Jeffrey’s expression darkened, the weight of the situation pressing on him. “Let’s focus on the company first. The Williams Group can’t afford to be distracted by family drama right now. I’ll deal with Skylar later. She’ll learn that she can’t just walk away from us.”
As they drove back to the office, Maisy’s thoughts churned with schemes. She had already decided she would speak to Christopher about Skylar’s relationship with Ziegler—she had to make him see that Skylar was no longer the innocent, vulnerable woman he once knew. If Skylar wanted to play games, Maisy was more than willing to play along.
Back at the office, Skylar was still processing everything that had just happened. The exchange with Jeffrey and Maisy, the way they had tried to control her, to manipulate her into feeling guilty—it felt like a lifetime ago. Yet, her heart still ached a little when she thought of her father, or the man who had once been her father.
Joe’s support had been unexpected but comforting. He had stood up for her, and that was something Skylar didn’t take lightly. For the first time in a long while, she felt like she had someone who would back her up—someone who wouldn’t try to use her for their own gain. But at the same time, it only reminded her of just how far she had come from the family she once knew.
It was over. There was no going back.
