George raised an eyebrow at Gloria’s suggestion, a playful smile tugging at the corners of his lips. “Give her something nice, huh? Well, I suppose I can’t refuse when you put it that way.”
Skylar chuckled at the exchange, feeling the warmth of the friendly atmosphere. She had grown fond of George’s eccentric nature and his genuine affection for his collections. It was clear that he cared deeply about preserving history, and Skylar was more than happy to help him ensure everything in his collection was authentic.
“Honestly, I’ve already received more than enough,” Skylar said, feeling slightly embarrassed by the attention. “Helping you out is all the reward I need.”
But George wouldn’t hear of it. “Nonsense, Skye. You’ve helped me uncover so many counterfeits tonight, and your efforts are invaluable. Gloria is right, you deserve something for your trouble.”
He motioned for Skylar to follow him toward the back of the room. As they walked, he explained, “There’s something I’ve been meaning to give to someone who truly appreciates the art of collecting. And it seems you’re the perfect person for it.”
Skylar followed with curiosity, wondering what he had in mind. When they reached a small table covered with velvet cloth, George gestured to a delicate, almost imperceptible item resting on the surface. It was a small, intricately carved jade figurine, no larger than the palm of her hand.
“This,” George began, his tone almost reverent, “is a piece I’ve had for many years. It’s a rare jade artifact from the Qing Dynasty. Very few like it remain intact.”
Skylar’s eyes widened as she examined the figurine closely. It was exquisite, with every curve and detail masterfully crafted. The jade itself had a deep, translucent glow that almost seemed to shift with the light.
“I don’t know if I’m worthy of such a valuable gift,” Skylar said softly, her fingers gently brushing over the smooth surface of the jade.
George smiled warmly. “You are more than worthy, Skye. You have an eye for the details that most would miss, and that alone makes you deserving of it.”
Skylar hesitated, still feeling unprepared to accept such a gift. But when she looked up and saw George’s sincerity, she couldn’t help but feel touched. “Thank you, Mr. Querbach,” she said, her voice sincere. “I’ll take good care of it.”
Gloria, who had been watching the exchange with a proud smile, gave her approval. “There you go, Skye. A perfect gift for someone as dedicated as you.”
Skylar smiled back at both of them, grateful for the kindness they had shown her. “I’ll treasure it, I promise.”
As they returned to the sitting area, George clapped his hands together, eager to shift the mood. “Now, how about we relax for the evening? I know you’ve both had a long day, and I’m sure Skye could use some rest after her inspection.”
Gloria nodded in agreement. “I think that’s a good idea. We’ll have plenty of time tomorrow to chat more and enjoy each other’s company.”
As Skylar settled back into a comfortable chair, she couldn’t help but reflect on how quickly her evening had turned from a simple visit to a memorable experience. She had not only helped George and Gloria with their antique collection but had also gained a deeper appreciation for the world of treasures they held dear.
