Kenny’s mind raced as the conversation continued. He had always felt a sense of superiority over Skylar, thinking that he had the right to criticize and control her actions. But now, with everything that had happened, a nagging doubt crept into his thoughts. Had they really treated her fairly? Was there more to her behavior than they had noticed?
As the tension in the room mounted, Jeffrey remained quiet, his face etched with frustration. He wasn’t sure whether to blame Skylar or her circumstances, but he couldn’t deny that the rift in the family had grown deeper.
Sadie, on the other hand, was visibly upset. Her maternal instincts kicked in, and she wanted to find a way to mend the broken bond between Skylar and the family. Yet, the more she thought about it, the more she felt betrayed. Skylar’s apparent indifference towards Maisy’s health was the final straw for her. How could she be so cruel? Sadie didn’t want to believe it, but the thought lingered in her mind.
“I just don’t get it,” Sadie muttered, wiping a stray tear from her cheek. “Why has Skylar become so cold? I don’t even recognize her anymore. She used to be such a sweet girl.”
Maisy, still feeling the weight of her family’s disappointment, tried to hold back her tears. “It’s not her fault, Mom. She’s just confused… maybe we all are.” But deep down, Maisy knew that Skylar’s actions had hurt her, too. She couldn’t ignore the hurt of being overlooked and the constant comparisons to Skylar, who seemed to be getting all the attention and focus.
“Maybe we should give her a chance to explain herself,” Kenny suggested quietly, his voice filled with uncertainty. It wasn’t like him to show doubt, but something in his heart told him that Skylar might not be the person they thought she was.
Samuel, on the other hand, scoffed. “Explain herself? What’s there to explain? She’s chosen her path, and it’s not one we can support.”
Despite his words, there was an uncomfortable tension in the air. Samuel’s cynicism about Skylar’s relationship with Paul was starting to clash with the deeper uncertainties that had been building up in him. He hated the idea of being wrong, but he couldn’t ignore the fact that the situation wasn’t as black and white as he had thought.
Jeffrey finally spoke, his voice low. “We’re all just too angry right now. Maybe we need some time to figure this out, but… I don’t think we can just ignore what she’s done. We need answers.”
Sadie nodded, but she couldn’t shake the feeling that if Skylar didn’t come back and apologize soon, their relationship might be beyond repair.
Meanwhile, at the Martin residence, Joe sat in his living room, lost in his thoughts. He couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that things with Skylar were becoming increasingly complicated. After their awkward interaction, he couldn’t help but question his own behavior.
Was he too harsh on her? He had never been great with relationships, but Skylar had done nothing but show him kindness. She didn’t deserve his coldness.
As he thought back to their meal together, Joe’s mind kept returning to the tea bags she had given him. A small gesture, but one that spoke volumes. Maybe it was her way of caring, a way of showing that she was there for him.
“I need to fix this,” Joe muttered under his breath. He didn’t know what the future held, but one thing was clear—he couldn’t let things spiral out of control with Skylar.
Meanwhile, Skylar sat in her room, staring out the window. She felt the weight of everything pressing down on her. Her family’s expectations, Joe’s misunderstanding, and the guilt she felt for letting everything get so out of hand.
She had tried to do the right thing, to help her family, to help Joe, but it never seemed to be enough. Maybe she had been too naive in thinking she could make things right.
A knock at the door interrupted her thoughts.
“Skylar, it’s me, Grandma,” came Gloria’s soft voice. “Can I come in?”
Skylar stood up and opened the door, forcing a smile despite the heaviness in her heart. “Of course, Grandma.”
Gloria stepped inside and closed the door behind her. She gave Skylar a concerned look but didn’t say anything right away.
“I heard what happened with your brothers tonight,” Gloria finally said, her voice gentle but firm. “And I know things have been difficult for you lately. But remember, we all make mistakes. Even your brothers. They might not see it now, but they’ll realize eventually that they’ve pushed you too far.”
Skylar’s eyes filled with tears. “I don’t know what to do anymore, Grandma. It feels like nothing I do is ever enough. I can’t fix everything.”
“You don’t have to fix everything, dear,” Gloria replied, placing a hand on her shoulder. “Sometimes, just being yourself is enough. Don’t let the weight of others’ expectations crush you. You’ve been a good girl, Skylar. You have a kind heart, and that’s what matters most.”
Skylar nodded, grateful for her grandmother’s words, though she knew the road ahead wouldn’t be easy. But for the first time in a long while, she felt like she had someone who truly understood her.
Gloria smiled warmly. “Now, how about we get some rest? You’ve been through a lot today. Things will look better in the morning.”
Skylar took a deep breath, feeling a sense of comfort wash over her. “Thanks, Grandma. You’re right. Maybe tomorrow will be better.”
As Skylar lay in bed that night, she couldn’t shake the feeling that change was coming. The tension with her family, her relationship with Joe, and everything else—it felt like something had to give. She just hoped she would be ready when the time came.
