Chapter_34
Skylar’s words cut through the tension like a knife. “I’ve broken up with you long ago, Christopher! Don’t call me ‘babe’ anymore. Just the sight of you repulses me. Because of you, I even hate the idea of becoming someone’s wife!”
The rage burning within her seemed to amplify with every word she spoke, the anger that had been festering for so long finally bubbling to the surface. She could feel the physical weight of it, her stomach clenching painfully, and her face grew paler with the effort of suppressing everything that threatened to explode.
Christopher’s face twisted in surprise. “Babe, do you even know what you’re saying?” His tone was a mix of confusion and disbelief, but Skylar could see through it. He wasn’t concerned about her; he was only focused on the fact that she wasn’t falling for his charm this time.
Skylar fought to keep her composure, her lips thinning into a tight line as she growled, “Get lost!”
The force of her words struck Christopher like a slap. He had never expected her to reject him so forcefully. “Skylar, you know I’d never threaten to break up randomly, yet you keep bringing it up. Aren’t you afraid we’ll actually end up going our separate ways?” His voice was louder now, filled with frustration and a hint of anger.
Skylar’s eyes darkened as she spoke through clenched teeth. “You’d better not show your face from today onward.”
She had once believed in him, once trusted him, but now he seemed nothing more than a vile scumbag—a man who had wasted her time and emotions. She thought back to the pain he had caused her, all the lies and manipulations. The thought made her blood boil.
“I can’t fucking wait to see what Christopher will do when I end up in the hospital and need an exorbitant amount of money for surgery fees again,” she thought bitterly.
Christopher’s face turned red with rage as he pointed at her. “You’d better not regret doing this!” He spat the words at her before turning on his heel and storming off, leaving Skylar standing there, feeling a strange mix of relief and disgust.
As Christopher disappeared from her sight, Skylar’s chest, which had been tight with anxiety, finally began to relax. She breathed in deeply, the anger starting to subside, but the emotional weight of everything was far from over.
Meanwhile, Joe stood in the hotel lounge on the first floor, observing the entire exchange through the floor-to-ceiling windows. His expression hardened as he texted Skylar: “You don’t have to wait up anymore.” The warmth had drained from his gaze as he watched the scene unfold.
Just then, Maisy stepped off the elevator and immediately noticed Joe standing by the windows. She couldn’t help herself—she was drawn to him. He exuded an undeniable charisma, and it was clear he was someone worth connecting with.
She hurried toward him, her heels clicking sharply against the floor with every step, determined to make the most of this rare opportunity. “You must be Mr. Martin, right?” she began, a forced smile on her lips. “What happened earlier was a misunderstanding. I’ve already forgiven that impetuous young woman.”
Maisy had clearly hoped for an introduction, perhaps to win his favor. Sadie, standing nearby, didn’t interfere. She knew Maisy had her sights set on Joe, and it wasn’t every day that a woman like her was so eager to connect with someone of his caliber.
Joe turned around slowly, his eyes narrowing with a cold, uninviting look as Maisy approached him. His expression was firm, his brows drawn together in a frown.
Maisy jolted at his gaze, her voice faltering. “M-Mr. Martin?”
Without a word, Joe turned and began walking away, ignoring her completely.
The sting of rejection hit Maisy like a slap to the face. She had always been the one to make men chase after her, never the one to be dismissed so easily. The realization that Joe had ignored her so blatantly left her feeling exposed and humiliated.
Sadie quickly rushed to Maisy’s side, trying to console her. “Maybe Mr. Martin is busy and couldn’t stay for a chat with you. It seemed like something was bothering him. Who knows? Maybe he’s in a bad mood because something happened. Don’t overthink it.” She gently placed a hand on Maisy’s shoulder, offering reassurance.
Maisy, still reeling from the snub, looked up at her mother, her eyes reddened with frustration. “Mom, does Mr. Martin not like me? He totally ignored me when I was talking to him.”
Sadie, ever the optimist, smiled as she tried to lift Maisy’s spirits. “Your dad says he’s hoping to negotiate a collaboration project with Martin Group in two days. I’ll ask him to bring you along. You’ll get another chance to speak with Mr. Martin then.”
The promise seemed to restore some of Maisy’s confidence. She nodded, wiping her eyes as she straightened up. But deep down, the sting of being dismissed was still there, a bruise to her pride that she couldn’t easily shake off.
An hour later, Maisy picked up her phone and called Christopher. Her voice was sharp as she spoke, her frustration still evident. “Did you meet up with Skylar? Did you punish her on my behalf? My face still hurts after getting beaten up by her! I don’t know what’s wrong with her today!”
Christopher’s voice crackled through the line, still irked by Skylar’s earlier rejection. “She’s gone crazy. She won’t listen to me anymore. But don’t worry. I’ll handle things.” The frustration in his tone matched Maisy’s own as they both tried to process the unexpected turn of events.
