Chapter_42
As Skylar washed her hands, she could faintly hear Daniel and Caleb speaking in low voices. Their words were hushed, but still discernible. Caleb was the first to speak, his tone a mix of concern and teasing.
“Do you really think she’s okay? I mean, I know she says she’s fine, but something doesn’t feel right. It doesn’t seem like she’s taking the breakup as well as she’s letting on.”
Daniel gave a thoughtful shrug, his expression pensive. “Skylar’s tough. We’ve seen how she handles things. But even the strongest people have their weak moments. If she says she’s alright, we should trust her. The last thing we want is for her to bottle things up even more.”
Skylar quickly dried her hands, stepping out from the washroom just as Caleb finished speaking. A small smile tugged at her lips as she faced the two men, hearing the concern in their voices.
“You guys don’t have to worry about me,” she said gently, putting their concerns to rest. “I’ve been through worse, and honestly, a bit of work helps clear my mind.”
Caleb shot her a skeptical look, but he softened, clearly not wanting to push her. “Alright, Skye. Just don’t push yourself too hard, okay? You know we’re here if you need to talk—or even just take a break.”
Skylar gave him a reassuring nod. “I appreciate it, both of you. But really, I’m fine. Let’s get to work.”
She moved toward the table, where a collection of antiques awaited her expertise. As she began inspecting them, her mind briefly drifted back to Christopher’s post. The emotional mess he’d caused still lingered in the back of her mind, but she knew she had to focus. She had posted the truth for everyone to see, making it clear there was no going back. Still, a small part of her felt uneasy, wondering if Christopher would actually leave her alone now.
Daniel and Caleb didn’t push her any further, but Skylar could feel their eyes on her now and then. They knew her well enough to tell when something was off. However, Skylar was determined not to let her personal problems interfere with her passion for work.
As she carefully began the restoration process, she found that her attention to detail was helping her clear her mind. The meticulous nature of her work—the delicate movements, the subtle repairs—was almost like a meditation. For a brief moment, the noise of the world outside faded, and all that remained was Skylar, surrounded by beautiful, timeless pieces of history.
And in that moment, for the first time in a while, she felt a sense of peace.
