Forty minutes later, Skylar pulled into the police station’s parking lot. As she was about to step out of her car, her phone rang—Steven’s name appeared on the screen.
“Where are you now, Skye?” he asked.
“I’m in the parking lot in front of the police station, just about to head in to make a report. What’s up, Steven?” Skylar replied.
There was a sigh of relief in his voice when he answered. “Hold off on going to the station for now. There are new videos circulating online. They’re more detailed than the ones you have. Some of them show Christopher and Maisy going to a hotel, and others have clips of them on dates at various restaurants. People claiming to be your old classmates have shared some juicy details, too. It’s the hottest topic online right now.”
Skylar paused, taken aback by the sudden turn of events.
“Someone also revealed how you were falsely reported and banned from posting on social media. We’ve got the upper hand now. They should be the ones panicking,” Steven added.
Skylar ended the call and immediately checked the news. Sure enough, the top trending topic had shifted. It was filled with shocking revelations that exposed the lies Maisy and the others had spread. The truth was coming out.
Skylar couldn’t help but wonder—had these people always wanted to expose the Williams family’s hypocrisy? Was this their way of making sure the public saw the truth, even if it meant going up against the powerful family? Just the night before, similar voices had tried to speak out but had been suppressed by the Williams’ online trolls.
So how was it possible that the truth had managed to surface now?
Before she could process this further, her phone rang again. It was Natalie.
“Skye, I’m not sure if it was because I got a few of our old classmates to share their statements, but it worked,” Natalie’s voice came through with excitement. “The trolls the Williams family hired can’t keep the truth hidden anymore. Justice is being served. Maisy’s righteous-sounding statement is nothing but a joke.”
Natalie continued, “And you had so many admirers back in university. I never liked Christopher when he came to visit you on campus. Turns out, he’s just as terrible as we thought. He even released a statement accusing you of jealousy. I wish I could slap him a few times for that!”
Skylar chuckled, though there was a hint of emotion in her voice. “It’s been almost a month since we last met, right? You tried to meet me when I first got back into the Williams family, but I was busy. I’ve had a lot going on, but I think I finally have some free time now.”
“Exactly! We’ll meet tomorrow at 6:00 pm. It’s my husband’s birthday today, and I just made dinner for him, but tomorrow is all about you,” Natalie said warmly. “We’ll go to our usual stew place, and then I’ll take you somewhere you’ll never expect.”
Skylar couldn’t help but tease, “I can’t believe our Natty is such a dutiful wife now.”
Natalie laughed. “I might be a dutiful wife today, but tomorrow, I’m your understanding friend. I’m definitely not someone who only cares about her husband.”
After ending the call with Natalie, Skylar drove to a street known for its antique shops. She needed some time to clear her head after everything that had unfolded.
Meanwhile, Steven’s group chat was blowing up with messages.
“Steven, did you guys hire the best PR team or what?” one of his friends texted.
“This comeback is legendary. The Williams’ PR team didn’t even have time to react,” another added.
“They found all the evidence so quickly! You guys really know how to work things,” a third message came through.
Steven scrolled through the messages with a frown, his mind racing. He quickly typed his response.
“It wasn’t us. I don’t think this is a planned comeback by anyone. My sister and I aren’t connected to any PR team this good,” he wrote, the frustration clear in his tone. “If we were, I wouldn’t have lost sleep over all this last night. This isn’t something we orchestrated. I work in public relations, and I know when posts are from verified accounts. The media, the evidence—it’s all been carefully prepared.”
As he hit send, Steven couldn’t shake the feeling that someone had been working behind the scenes, making sure the truth came to light, just when it mattered most.
