Chapter_69
Steven still looked grim. “Did that guy buy this car for you?”
Skylar, still so young, hadn’t seemed the type to just live with any random man. The thought of her possibly being heartbroken because of Christopher made Steven’s chest ache. The urge to confront Christopher and beat him to a pulp was hard to suppress.
“I bought it myself. Our family’s life will improve from now on,” Skylar said, reassuring him.
Steven frowned. A car like this, a new energy vehicle, probably cost more than ten thousand dollars. Skylar had been doing restoration work lately and, yes, she could indeed earn some money.
“Are you living together with him?” Steven asked, his voice a bit more serious.
“Yeah, at his place,” Skylar answered, her gaze fixed ahead on the bustling traffic. She felt a strange weight lift off her chest as she said it.
Steven fell silent for the next 30 minutes, his thoughts swirling. As they neared his staff dormitory, he finally spoke up. “Skye, find a chance for me to meet him.”
Skylar hesitated for a moment. “I’ll arrange for you to meet him, but don’t tell Mom and Peter about my marriage yet. They’ll definitely worry.”
Her eyes flashed with uncertainty. Let Joe meet Steven? She doubted he would agree to meet her family. She knew her place—her relationship with Joe was bound by nothing more than a paper agreement.
When the car stopped, Steven sighed heavily. “Does he treat you well?”
“Yeah, but he’s just a bit… aloof,” Skylar replied carefully.
“Being aloof might not always be a bad thing. It’s better than Christopher’s sweet talk,” Steven said, his tone lightening just a little.
As he got out of the car, his concern remained. “Skye, tell me if anything happens.”
“I will,” Skylar replied obediently.
Meanwhile, Christopher was at home, scratching his already messy hair in frustration as he read the endless stream of rumors online. He almost crushed his phone in his hand.
When he asked Maisy about it, she said they were still trying to figure things out. He regretted issuing any statements. There were tens of thousands of comments cursing him under his post. Though the buzz had died down a little due to the Williams family’s suppression, it had cost him his job.
Suddenly, his phone rang. It was his mother, Amelia.
“Chris, is what they’re saying online true? Are you dating Maisy?” she asked.
Christopher’s eyes were bloodshot. “Mom, w-we’re not really dating…” he muttered.
“I remember you saying before that even though Skylar has returned to her biological family, they don’t seem to like her. They prefer Maisy instead, right?” Amelia asked.
“Yeah, what about it? I’m really frustrated right now. Can we talk tomorrow when I go to the hospital?” Christopher scratched his head again.
“Well, since Skylar is so ungrateful and even exposed you online, why don’t you take this opportunity to really date Maisy? You could try to get into the Williams family business. By then, you’d be working for their company as their son-in-law. With your abilities, their company could eventually be yours,” Amelia suggested, her eyes gleaming with ambition.
Christopher felt a flicker of hope in his bloodshot eyes. “You reminded me…” he muttered.
At 10:00 pm, Skylar returned to Galaxy Villa. The lights were still on inside. It seemed that Joe had come back earlier than expected.
She was about to go upstairs when she saw him sitting on the couch, a steaming cup of tea in his hand. A faint herbal scent wafted through the air, mixing with the silence of the evening.
