Skylar’s expression shifted at Caleb’s question. She hadn’t thought much about Christopher or the situation with him lately—there was so much going on with her family, her work, and her personal battles. The last thing she wanted to do was revisit that chapter of her life.
She set the glass of water down and met Caleb’s eyes. “No, Caleb. I’m not getting back together with him. Not now, not ever,” she said firmly. The certainty in her voice left little room for doubt. She had learned so much in the time since she had broken up with Christopher, not just about him, but about herself too.
“Good,” Caleb said, giving her a slight nod. “You deserve better than that. He’s not the one for you.”
Skylar appreciated Caleb’s directness and the way he always had her back, even when things seemed complicated. She couldn’t say the same about her family or the people who claimed to care for her.
“It’s just… he didn’t deserve the chance to get back in my life,” Skylar continued, her voice softer now. “But seeing all this drama unfold—well, it makes me wonder why I ever wasted my time on someone who could be so easily swayed by a little bit of attention.”
Caleb smiled. “You’re better off without him. Don’t let his mistakes or anyone else’s issues pull you down. You’ve got your own path now.”
Skylar smiled, feeling the weight of her words settle within her. She wasn’t going to let the past keep dragging her back. Not when she was finally carving out a future that felt right.
As she looked at Caleb, grateful for his support, a thought crossed her mind—she was surrounded by people who actually cared for her, even if it didn’t always feel that way. And maybe that was enough for now.
