Chapter 221
Skylar continued sifting through the numerous orders she had received, but the sheer number of them was overwhelming. She had been waiting for a response from that buyer, but eventually, fatigue caught up with her. As she sat on the bed, her eyelids grew heavy, and she drifted off to sleep.
By the time she woke up, it was already morning.
She made her way downstairs, only to bump into Joe, who had just returned from his morning jog. Naturally, she greeted him. “Good morning.”
“Good morning,” Joe replied, wiping the sweat from his brow with a towel.
Skylar couldn’t help but watch as sweat dripped down his chin, and she suddenly felt her expression stiffen. What had happened the night before was just an accident. Nothing more.
Taking a moment to compose herself, Skylar shifted her gaze to the spread of food laid out on the dining table—a hearty breakfast waiting to be enjoyed.
“I’m going up to take a shower. If you’re hungry, feel free to have breakfast,” Joe said.
Skylar nodded, saving the pleasantries for later, and sat down at the table. She helped herself to some of the food, choosing whatever she felt like eating from the variety laid out before her.
Joe was quick. He returned downstairs ten minutes later, and when he saw Skylar leisurely enjoying her breakfast, he joined her at the table.
Without saying much, both of them continued with their meal, an unspoken agreement passing between them to put aside the events of the previous night.
After breakfast, they headed back to the city. Joe dropped Skylar off at her office first. She stepped out of the car, and as Joe’s car passed through the traffic light, she turned her gaze away. She had taken the day off yesterday, so today, she had to catch up and work even harder.
With long strides, she headed towards the office building.
Just as she neared the entrance, she spotted a middle-aged couple standing in front. At this hour, everyone was heading to work, but the couple looked out of place, especially since they were impeccably dressed in branded attire. Skylar’s colleagues couldn’t help but feel curious.
Isn’t it a bit early for customers to be here? But the couple didn’t seem to be here for their services. They were empty-handed, and instead, it seemed like they were waiting for someone.
When the couple noticed Skylar, they immediately began walking toward her. It didn’t take long for her colleagues to realize: the couple was here for Skylar.
Skylar glanced at her watch. She had ten minutes before she needed to go inside.
“Skye, you’re finally here. Why haven’t you been answering your phone? Your dad and I have been worried about you.”
Sadie approached her with an unusually polite demeanor, attempting to take Skylar’s hands without permission.
Skylar raised an eyebrow. She’d never seen Sadie act this way before. Her smile seemed deliberate—maybe even fake. There was no warmth in it.
Jeffrey, too, seemed eager to explain himself. “We didn’t communicate our thoughts well the other day. You must’ve misunderstood us. You’re our biological daughter, and we finally found you after all this time. We can’t let someone else disgrace you, can we? We were just too concerned about you. We were worried that you’d be deceived.”
Skylar studied them both carefully. Jeffrey looked worn-out, his face haggard. He hadn’t slept well for days, and it was clear that the pressure he was under was starting to show.
Sadie, sensing Skylar’s aloofness, seemed uneasy. She had noticed the distance in Skylar’s attitude. Not long ago, Skylar had been eager to please her, trying hard to gain her approval. But now, there was an icy distance between them.
Kenny and the others had approached her recently, and now here was this couple. Skylar felt a surge of frustration. Were they really going to keep pushing?
