In the evening, Kenny returned to the Williams family villa. During this time, Jeffrey and Peter were practically living at the company, and Samuel was seldom home due to his busy filming schedule. As a result, only Kenny, Sadie, and Maisy were present in the house.
Sadie and Maisy were having dinner. When she saw Kenny enter, Sadie weakly said, “Come and have dinner.”
Maisy, however, had lost her appetite. The meals at home had been bland lately, with only a few dishes served. She glanced at Kenny as he entered, their eyes meeting briefly. Maisy quickly averted her gaze, as though shy.
Kenny couldn’t help but notice her reaction, and it lifted his spirits. Despite how many people at the office had distanced themselves from him, Maisy remained by his side. He smiled and walked over to join them.
During the meal, Kenny and Maisy exchanged furtive glances. It was as if they were silently communicating with each other, sharing a secret connection that Sadie, preoccupied with her thoughts, didn’t notice.
It wasn’t until they were almost finished eating that Sadie spoke up. “I heard from a friend today that Skylar joined Mr. Gardner Senior’s team on her own. He’s the kind of person who won’t take you in unless you’re truly capable, even if you’re his son. So, it’s possible that Skylar made it onto his team by her own merit.”
Sadie’s words made them realize how little they had valued or understood Skylar’s potential.
Maisy, noticing the regret in Sadie’s expression, took her attention away from Kenny. She immediately added, “I’ve always thought Skylar was outstanding. But some things aren’t as simple as we think. Besides, her new boyfriend isn’t Mr. Gardner or Mr. Martin. He seems to be just an ordinary guy.”
The mention of Caleb and Joe caused Sadie’s expression to darken. She realized they had misunderstood Skylar all along. However, a twinge of regret remained within her. If Skylar had truly gotten involved with one of those men, their family might have had powerful connections. Perhaps the company’s troubles could have been solved by now.
“We should find her again to clear up the misunderstandings from before, when we have the chance,” Sadie said. She continued, “My friend said that since she’s working in Mr. Gardner Senior’s team, she’s bound to succeed. In the future, many people will seek her out for help. By then, it will be a point of pride for our family.”
Even though Sadie’s tone was neutral, Maisy found her words unsettling. What did Sadie mean by “soaring to success”? Maisy couldn’t bear the thought of Skylar surpassing her. Everyone in the family had to like her, not Skylar.
Kenny had once harbored a sense of guilt toward Skylar, but at that moment, he frowned as he sensed Maisy’s disappointment.
“Mom, stop talking about her. She holds too much of a grudge against us,” Kenny said, his voice tinged with frustration.
“I’m done eating, Mom. I’m heading upstairs to rest,” Maisy replied, her tone flat and gloomy.
With that, Maisy rose from the table and headed up the stairs.
Kenny placed his utensils down and said, “Mom, Maisy’s feeling down. I’ll go check on her.”
Sadie nodded. “Go ahead.”
So, Kenny went upstairs and entered Maisy’s room.
As soon as she saw him, tears welled up in her eyes. “Kenny, do you all like Skylar more than me? Is it because of my feelings for you… that you dislike me too?”
