“That’s good to hear,” Caleb said, nodding repeatedly. It had been a while since he’d last seen Skylar, and he wasn’t quite sure how to talk to her. Still, seeing her made him happy.
“Do you have time tonight? Maybe we could grab dinner together,” Caleb quickly suggested, hoping to steer the conversation in a different direction. He wanted to have a proper chat with her.
Since their last conversation about her marriage, they hadn’t really spoken or seen each other, and Caleb felt a need to address things.
Alexander raised an eyebrow, taken aback. Was Caleb still holding onto feelings for Skylar?
Skylar, sensing her exhaustion, apologized with a polite smile. “I have some things to do tonight. How about we plan for another day?”
Having had little sleep last night and spending time with Joe in the morning, she was already drained, especially after a busy workday.
“Alright,” Caleb said, his tone tinged with disappointment. His gaze softened when he noticed the fatigue in her eyes. He’d heard from Alexander about how hard Skylar had been working on restoring Frank’s painting. He hadn’t considered how much of a toll it was taking on her.
The three of them exited the building, chatting casually. Skylar said her goodbyes to Alexander and Caleb before heading toward the parking lot. But just as she was about to leave, a figure suddenly stepped into her path.
“Skylar!” the voice called.
The smile vanished from Skylar’s face when she saw who it was.
The memory of that night, the video she had seen, flooded her mind. The images of Christopher and Maisy in the video still made her stomach churn.
Christopher, noticing the disgust and disdain in Skylar’s eyes, felt a sharp sting. They had been together for so many years, and this was the first time she had looked at him like that. He felt like nothing more than trash in her eyes.
“Why are you looking at me like that? You never used to look at me this way. Have you forgotten how wonderful we once were?” Christopher’s voice trembled, filled with hurt, as though he’d been wronged.
Every time they’d argued in the past, he would plead for her forgiveness like this, and each time, she’d softened and forgave him. But not this time.
“Skye, so much has happened recently. We’ve fought, we’ve argued, and I know I made mistakes. I was wrong. Please, give me a chance to make it right. I swear, I won’t make the same mistake again. If you forgive me, I’ll do whatever you ask. Please, don’t close the door on us.”
Christopher’s eyes welled with tears as he spoke. It was said that men didn’t cry easily, but these were tears of genuine remorse. Only after losing Skylar did he realize how much she meant to him.
Seeing this scene, both Alexander and Caleb walked over, their expressions hardening.
Caleb turned to Alexander and said with a raised voice, “That guy is Skylar’s ex-boyfriend, the one who cheated on her. He’s a complete scumbag. Look at him, crying and trying to play the victim!”
Christopher, still wiping away tears, suddenly felt embarrassed, realizing he’d been overheard.
At the same moment, Alexander subtly signaled the head of the security team, who was standing nearby. It was clear that the situation was becoming tense.
