Sadie’s voice was full of satisfaction as she told Maisy, “We met with Skye, but she didn’t tell us anything. However, your dad and I managed to figure out who her sugar daddy is.”
Maisy felt a cold sensation grip her heart. Her fingers tightened around her phone. Was what she had feared finally happening? She didn’t want Sadie and Jeffrey to find out about Skylar’s relationship with Joel. If they did, they would treat Skylar differently, which would push Maisy out of the picture in the family.
“Well… Who do you think it is?” Maisy forced herself to ask, trying to keep her voice steady.
Sadie’s response was sure. “It’s John Gardner, Mr. Gardner Senior’s younger son. He’s just gotten engaged and wouldn’t want anyone to know he has a mistress.”
She paused before adding, “Don’t tell anyone about this, okay? Skylar’s found herself an influential lover. But remember, she’s a mistress. We don’t want this to get out—it would be too humiliating for us.”
Maisy was stunned. “John?” Her voice barely registered the shock.
Why would they think it was him? She had considered it before but discarded the idea. Could they both be wrong? She had thought it was him too, but what if she had been mistaken? Annie had seemed so sure it was someone else. Which one of them was right?
Maisy wished, with all her heart, that Skylar’s lover was John. That would make everything simpler for her.
“Yes, we’re sure it’s him,” Sadie continued, oblivious to Maisy’s turmoil. “You should get some rest, Maisy. You’ve been so anxious since we got into this mess. Now that there’s a glimmer of hope for a better outcome, you need to take care of yourself. Don’t worry.”
The call ended, but Maisy remained motionless, staring at the phone in her hand. Could it really be John?
Even though she suspected it was Joe, she didn’t want the Williams family to know that. If they believed it was John, then so be it. Let them think that.
Maisy tossed the phone aside and wandered to the restroom. As she gazed at her tired reflection in the mirror, memories of the night before flooded her mind. The euphoria she had felt from the new drug was still vivid in her thoughts.
Just as she was lost in those memories, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Christopher. Her stomach turned in frustration. She had stopped caring about him a long time ago. He was just someone Skylar had discarded, and there was no way Maisy would feel anything for him.
But when she saw the video files attached, curiosity got the best of her. At first, she thought it was a way for him to win her back, a collection of videos from their past dates.
She clicked on the first video, not expecting what came next. As the video played, her eyes widened in shock. She could clearly hear her own voice—suggestive, wild, and unrestrained. It wasn’t just any ordinary video. This was a recording of the man she had met the previous night, the man who had taken her on a reckless ride while she was high on the drug.
Her fingers trembled as she clicked on the next video. Her shock deepened. After the first man had left, several others had entered the room. She had no memory of it, but the video clearly showed what had happened. She had been completely out of control. The drug had clouded her mind, and she hadn’t been aware of what was going on.
Now, watching the video, it all clicked—she had been totally reckless. She had always enjoyed fun, but this was far beyond what she ever intended.
Her hands shook as she dialed Christopher’s number. “How did you get these videos? Where did you find them?” Her voice was cold with fury. “Christopher, I demand an explanation!”
Her heart pounded in her chest. If these videos got out, it would be the end of her. She was already in enough trouble with the Williams family. The last thing she needed was her darkest moment exposed for everyone to see.
