Chapter 229
Before returning to her work, Skylar put her phone on silent and set it aside. Then, she threw herself fully into her task, her attention unwavering.
Some of her colleagues, curious about her working style, passed by her workspace to catch a glimpse through the glass window. They didn’t interrupt, but they couldn’t help pausing for a moment, captivated by the quiet intensity with which she worked.
Only those truly knowledgeable in the field could recognize the level of expertise Skylar displayed. But even to the untrained eye, her focus and elegance were compelling.
Unaware of being observed, Skylar continued undisturbed, eyes fixed on the delicate piece in front of her.
A few colleagues thought she looked particularly attractive when working. One after another, they secretly snapped photos of her and sent them to the team’s group chat.
Soon, the chat was buzzing with updates.
Linda Jenkins:

“She’s not only gorgeous—her skills are top-notch. I’m genuinely envious.”

Patrick White:

“Right? I wonder if I stand a chance if I tried to court her.”

Isabelle Jacques:

“You might want to look in a mirror first.”

Patrick:

“Okay, okay. It was just a thought. Can’t I fantasize a little?”

Linda:

“Nope.”

Isabelle:

“Also no.”

Patrick:

“I finally get the urge to be straight for once, and this is how I’m treated?”

Max Zachman:

“I’m telling your boyfriend.”

Patrick:

“You traitor! I only have eyes for my boyfriend. Women and I are soul sisters, nothing more!”

The group chat quickly devolved into playful banter, filled with teasing remarks and laughing emojis.
Alexander rarely paid attention to their group chat—it was mostly a space for the younger team members to connect and let off steam. But that day, with nothing urgent on his plate, he skimmed through the messages out of curiosity.
When he read what they were saying about Skylar, he was momentarily stunned.
Her talent was obvious to anyone with even a hint of discernment. But what truly struck Alexander was a new pang of frustration.
Why couldn’t someone like her become his granddaughter-in-law?
Where had Caleb been hiding all this time? If only he had met Skylar a few months earlier!
That good-for-nothing! Alexander sighed heavily.
Knowing the boy’s heart was probably broken by now, he picked up his phone and called John.
“Cancel any dinner plans you’ve made tonight,” he said. “Caleb’s going to need some emotional support. Take him out for a ride or go play video games with him. Poor kid’s probably crushed.”
Meanwhile, Caleb had been trying to distract himself by reading, but after a few pages, he gave up and opened Instagram. He scrolled through his feed until a new post from Skylar caught his attention.
Skylar rarely posted anything. In fact, her account was usually dormant. But there it was—something new. A photo.
His thumb froze over the screen.
It was a picture of a man, taken from behind, on a golf course at sunset. The light bathed him in gold, painting a dreamy, cinematic scene.
Then he saw the caption:
“Let’s spend the rest of our lives together.”
Caleb’s heart dropped.
Was she… in a new relationship already? Or worse—was she married?
His hands trembled as he stared at the screen. “No way. Did someone hack her account? Or did she really post this?”
Panic swelled in his chest. Just a short while ago, she had broken up with a terrible guy. How had she suddenly ended up with someone new—someone serious enough to talk about forever?
He dialed her number immediately, but it rang and went unanswered.
His anxiety spiked. Desperate for a response, he left a comment on the post:
“Skylar, did you really post this? You didn’t, right? Did someone hack your account? Or have you lost your phone? You didn’t answer my call…”
He knew her habits. When she worked, her phone was always on silent. She didn’t check it until she was finished.
Still, his chest tightened. He hadn’t even worked up the courage to confess to her, and now… she was already married?
No. It couldn’t be.
His eyes narrowed as he looked again at the man in the photo. The silhouette looked to be around his height, with a strong, athletic build. The man’s posture hinted at confidence and experience.
But his clothing style… more mature. Definitely someone older than Caleb.
Caleb stared at the image, clenching his phone tightly.
Who was this man? And how had he entered Skylar’s life so quickly?
