Chapter 266
Annie was seething with fury and called out once more, “Skylar!”
Maintaining her calm smile, Skylar replied, “Ms. Silver, is there anything else?”
Annie was starting to lose patience. She couldn’t waste any more time with Skylar—Joe could arrive at any moment. With a frustrated sigh, she turned and got into her car. As it roared to life, she rolled down the window and looked back at Skylar.
“Skylar, you will regret this.”
Annie was certain that Joe wouldn’t stay interested in Skylar for long. He was probably only attracted to her because of her looks.
Skylar didn’t flinch, her smile never wavering. “I can tell you right now, I won’t regret it. But I can’t say the same for you. I’m usually quite easygoing, but if you want to play games, then two can play at that. When I see Mr. Martin, I’ll be sure to tell him about this,” she said, her voice dripping with mischief, and her eyebrows raised in playful defiance.
Annie gripped the steering wheel tightly, irritation bubbling up. “Let’s discuss this another time. I didn’t mean to offend you with my words earlier.”
Skylar smiled. Did Annie really think she was that gullible?
Annie took a deep breath, trying to keep her composure. “There’s no need to complain to Joe about this. He’s very busy with work. Bringing these petty squabbles to him will only make him dislike you, and that won’t do you any good.”
Skylar shrugged nonchalantly. “He says he likes it when I act clingy.” She wasn’t entirely sure what type of woman Joe preferred, but she was certain it wasn’t someone like Annie.
Annie’s face reddened with frustration. She knew Skylar was intentionally provoking her. No man liked a clingy woman, especially not Joe. Over the years, many women had tried everything to get his attention, but he had shown no interest in them. Could it be possible that he really liked Skylar’s carefree and bold nature?
Skylar couldn’t help but chuckle inwardly. Did Annie really fall for that so easily?
Annie, realizing she wasn’t getting anywhere, shifted her tone. “Anyway, let me apologize. Skylar, we could try to be friends. Being friends with me would bring you many benefits.”
Her voice was now as smooth and gracious as the persona she showcased on her TV show, the type of charm that easily won people over. Annie’s ability to switch personalities was almost impressive.
“There’s no need to be friends,” Skylar replied with a smile. “I don’t want to be taken advantage of. Please leave now; there’s not enough parking space here.”
Did Annie really think she could fool her that easily?
“Fine!” Annie hissed through gritted teeth, gripping the steering wheel so tightly her long nails left deep marks. She sped off, leaving the parking spot with a screech of tires.
As the car disappeared, Skylar’s smile faded. She knew that having an enemy like Annie would bring trouble in the future—but honestly, it was safer than having her as a friend.
“Since when did you understand me so well?” a voice asked suddenly behind her.
Skylar turned, startled. Joe was standing there, his lips curling into a slight smile, as though he had been waiting for her response.
Skylar felt her heart sink a little. “How much did you hear?”
“Almost everything,” Joe replied honestly. He had arrived just in time to see Skylar and Annie arguing, leaving Annie fuming with frustration. It was the first time he had seen the usually composed Annie so worked up.
Skylar felt embarrassed. Lately, it seemed she was constantly making a fool of herself in front of Joe. Any explanation now seemed pointless.
“We haven’t even been married that long, and you already know me better than I know you. Are you falling for me?” Joe whispered, stepping closer to her, closing the distance between them.
Skylar froze, caught off guard by his playful remark.
“Am I that lucky? Did I guess your preferences correctly?” she replied with a teasing smile. “If I sold this story to the press, I could make a fortune.”
