Chapter 289: Unspoken Thoughts
Charles hadn’t replied to her message, which Skylar assumed was because he was busy filming and couldn’t check his phone. Skylar knew her two brothers well—Steven was calm and steady, able to handle things with patience, while Charles tended to act impulsively. Given how quickly she and Joe had rushed into their marriage, Charles would likely have doubts about Joe. If they clashed, a confrontation could easily escalate.
Skylar had never seen Joe in a physical altercation, but she suspected he could be fiercely protective if pushed. On the other hand, Charles had a tendency to be reckless in a fight. It was hard to say who would come out on top, so it was probably best to keep things under wraps for now.
After replying to Charles, Skylar turned her attention to Natalie’s messages on WhatsApp. Natalie had sent her a series of increasingly dramatic photos. When Skylar hadn’t responded, Natalie had bombarded her with a flurry of messages.
“Skylar, are you hiding something from me? Have you been out with some hot guy?”

“Too tired to reply to me?”

“It’s so late, and you haven’t replied. There’s only one explanation—you’ve been up to no good! Tell me honestly! Don’t lie to your best friend!”

“Are you okay?”

“I just realized I don’t know your address. Are you sick? I heard there’s a nasty flu going around with high fevers. If you see this, reply right away so I can come take care of you!”

“Skye!”

“My friend!”

It was clear from this string of messages that Natalie was getting worried. Skylar felt a pang of guilt for not responding sooner. Quickly, she recorded a voice message for Natalie. When there was no immediate reply, she figured Natalie’s phone might have been on silent. So, Skylar sent a reassuring text:
“I’m fine, don’t worry. I went to bed early last night and rushed out this morning, so I didn’t have time to check my phone.”
After sending the message, Skylar put her phone aside and focused on her work. Frank’s painting restoration was almost complete, and Skylar hoped to finish it by Friday. She needed to concentrate fully over the next few days.
However, as she sat down, she felt the familiar soreness in her waist and weakness in her legs. It wasn’t unbearable, but there was no denying that Joe had certainly left an impression.
Meanwhile, Natalie was busy in her kitchen, humming happily. She had just received a call from Jeremy. His plane was landing in an hour, and he had the day off, so he would be heading straight home. After ten days apart, Natalie couldn’t wait to see him. She was excited by the surprise of his early return.
Jeremy always brought her thoughtful gifts from his business trips, and Natalie enjoyed the little surprises. It was always like opening a mystery box when he came home.
Feeling joyful, she hummed a tune as she prepared a nutritious breakfast. Jeremy would likely be home around 9:00 a.m., and she knew he wasn’t fond of airplane food. Accustomed to her cooking, he didn’t particularly enjoy hotel breakfasts, so she was making a lavish meal that could double as both breakfast and lunch.
Once she had finished most of the preparations, Natalie grabbed her phone and saw Skylar’s reply. She quickly typed a response.
“My husband is back from his trip and will be home soon. I was just busy cooking. I’m so glad you’re okay! I was worried sick! I have to go now, I’m making soup and need to check on it.”
Just as she hit send, her phone rang. It was Jeremy.
“Honey!”
