Chapter 299: Unwelcome Presence
Maisy hadn’t expected to run into Steven and Charles. She had just regained her composure and was about to knock on the door again when she saw them.
Sensing their indifference toward her, she cursed inwardly. Nevertheless, she forced a smile and said, “I came to see Mom and you two.”
Steven was taken aback by the sudden shift in Maisy’s attitude. On the other hand, Charles snorted coldly. “No need to act all friendly. You’re not welcome today. Come back another time if you want.”
It was their family time, and neither of them wanted Maisy around.
Maisy bit her lip, her eyes welling with tears. “You’re my brothers, and I just wanted to see you. I know I was wrong before, and I’ve realized my mistake.”
“I hope you can forgive me. Steven, I truly understand now. You guys are my real family,” she said earnestly, looking at them both.
Steven felt an inexplicable discomfort at being called so intimately. His frown deepened. “Today really isn’t the day for you to visit. Come back another time.”
Maisy chewed her lip, a tear rolling down her cheek. “I get it, you don’t want me here. Fine, I’ll leave now.”
Just as she turned to leave, the door behind her suddenly opened.
Janine stood there, surprised. “Maisy?”
She had heard Steven and Charles talking outside, prompting her to open the door.
“Mom, I… I came to see you.” Maisy’s heart skipped. She had planned to call Janine once Steven and Charles were inside, hoping to lament a bit and maybe garner some sympathy from her. Perhaps she could benefit from this situation.
Janine was happy to see Maisy, but with Skylar around, the situation was tricky. None of her children were particularly fond of Maisy, after all.
Janine hesitated for a moment before responding. “Mom, are Steven and Charles back?” Skylar’s voice came from inside.
Skylar?
Maisy sneered inwardly. No wonder they didn’t want her inside; Skylar was there too. Perfect.
“Skylar’s here too?” she said with exaggerated surprise, glancing eagerly at Janine.
Janine could only nod, still unsure how to handle the situation.
Skylar heard Maisy’s voice and her smile faded. It had been a while since she’d heard Maisy speak so pleasantly. She walked to the door, greeted Steven and Charles, then turned to face Maisy. It had been a few days since she last saw her. Though Maisy looked a bit pale, her makeup was flawless, and she was still as stunning as ever.
“Skylar, I’m so happy to see you at Mom’s!” Maisy said, with a feigned enthusiasm.
Harvey, who was standing by the door, snorted. “You’re so fake.”
Maisy’s smile stiffened but she quickly recovered. “It’s up to you to believe me or not. I know there have been misunderstandings in the past, but I’m genuinely happy to see you all.”
At this moment, the entire family had gathered at the door, creating an awkward scene.
Janine sighed softly, feeling a bit helpless. “Come on in, all of you.”
It wouldn’t be right to leave Maisy standing outside, but Janine could already sense the tension that had just entered their home.
Steven and Charles exchanged glances before looking at Skylar. They had hoped for a peaceful family gathering, but now it seemed Maisy’s appearance had thrown a wrench into their plans.
