Chapter 283
Charles typed out a message: “What are you doing, Skye?”

Noticing that he had sent a message to Skylar on WhatsApp, his friend chuckled. “You really care about your sister, huh?”

Charles replied matter-of-factly, “She’s my sister. If I don’t care about her, who will?”
His friend raised an eyebrow and asked, “Doesn’t your sister have a boyfriend?”
He remembered seeing a photo of Skylar on Charles’ phone and being immediately captivated. He had asked Charles to introduce her, but Charles mentioned she already had a boyfriend.
Charles’ expression darkened at the mention of Skylar’s ex. “That guy’s a jerk. They broke up,” he spat.
His friend’s eyes lit up with interest, but before he could speak, Charles dashed his hope. “You and my sister aren’t compatible either. You’ve had too many ex-girlfriends, and my sister’s too naïve to see through you.”
The friend quickly realized he had no chance with Skylar. However, he wasn’t one to give up everything for one woman.
“Alright, well, if it’s not meant to be, it’s not. But what’s going on with you and Samuel? He’s the second male lead, while you’re just a supporting role. Don’t confront him head-on. I heard he’s petty, and he’s targeted you before. If you don’t show him respect, he might make things difficult for you in the industry.”
Charles’ face hardened as he responded, “I’ll deal with that when it comes. I won’t tolerate him now.”
His friend was speechless. “Alright, suit yourself. I heard Samuel’s family’s company is facing some trouble lately. He used to rely on his connections and being a rich kid, but now, he’s in for a tough time.”
In truth, few people liked Samuel because of his arrogance.
Back at the restaurant, Skylar read Charles’ message but didn’t think much of it. She replied, “I’m having dinner.”
As she sat down, she noticed the table was almost fully set, with the stew bases and ingredients already laid out.
She lifted her head and saw Joe, engrossed in his phone, waiting for her.
“Why didn’t you start without me?” Skylar asked.
“I was waiting for you,” Joe replied, setting his phone aside. He began adding ingredients to the stew pot.
Skylar couldn’t help but stare at his slender fingers as he handled the cutlery, momentarily captivated. She recalled the night those hands had touched her. She gulped before adding her ingredients to the pot.
Some people exuded a sense of sophistication, even in something as simple as dining, and Joe was one of them. He looked elegant and dignified as he prepared their meal.
But no matter how captivating someone was, it didn’t matter when there was food in front of Skylar. Her attention quickly shifted to the stew.
The ingredients at this restaurant were incredibly fresh, and there were some items not available elsewhere. Skylar was in food heaven.
“This is amazing!” she exclaimed. “I heard from a friend that this chain is popular, but the prices are outrageous. I always thought places like this were just about the ambiance. I can’t believe how delicious it is!”
Skylar couldn’t stop praising the food. Unfortunately, it was the kind of place she couldn’t afford to visit often. It felt like every bite came with a hefty price tag.
She thought to herself that she might bring her family here sometime.
A small smile played on Joe’s lips. “If you like it here, you can come often.”
Skylar shook her head. “It’s too expensive. Once in a while is fine.”
Joe looked at her and said, “You’re Mrs. Martin. As long as it’s a restaurant under the Martin Group, you can dine for free. Come whenever you want.”
Skylar’s expression faltered slightly. Her status as Mrs. Martin was uncertain, and she couldn’t foresee when she might lose it. She had thought about it carefully over the past few days.
That night, Joe had lost control not because he liked her, but because they had both been under the influence of drugs. Perhaps, one day, Joe would meet a woman he truly fell for at first sight.
When that day came, Skylar would let him go.
