“Maisy, why are you here?” Harvey asked, his face darkening.
“I’m your sister. Why wouldn’t I be here? It’s the weekend, and I came to visit Mom,” Maisy replied, trying to sound calm, though annoyance laced her voice.
In truth, she was irritated with Harvey. Did he not understand family relationships? She was his real sister, yet he was rude to her. How uncultured.
Harvey’s expression grew colder as he snapped, “You’re not welcome here today. Next time, if you’re coming, call ahead. Don’t just show up.”
With a loud bang, Harvey slammed the door shut. It was a special day for their family to gather and enjoy each other’s company, and he didn’t want anyone ruining it—especially not Maisy. No matter what pretense she put on, Harvey was convinced that Maisy had ulterior motives and wasn’t up to anything good.
Maisy stood there, staring at the closed door, her face hardening with bitterness. She had rushed over on the weekend, hoping to have a chance to see Steven and improve their relationship. She could smell the delicious aroma wafting from inside, and when she looked through the window, she saw a table filled with food and the living room piled high with various items. It could only mean that Steven was back.
She hadn’t expected Harvey to dislike her so much. Damn it, he was so unlikeable.
At that moment, Janine, who had heard the noise, called out, “Who was it?”
Janine had just gone to change clothes and was admiring the outfits Skylar had bought for her.
“They got the wrong house,” Harvey replied curtly.
Janine didn’t think much of it. Instead, she smiled and asked, “What do you think of this dress? Skye really has a good eye. Everything she picked out suits me so well.”
After years of not dressing up, Janine couldn’t help but feel a warm sense of nostalgia. For the first time in a long while, she saw her younger self in the mirror.
“You look great in it,” Harvey praised, his voice softening as he admired his mother’s radiant smile.
Meanwhile, Skylar had finished preparing two dishes and brought them out of the kitchen. When she saw Janine smiling with pride, she couldn’t help but smile as well.
Just then, Steven and Charles arrived downstairs, each carrying bags in their hands. They chatted as they climbed the stairs, catching up on their lives.
Both had made progress in their careers, and they were earning more money than before. They even discussed the idea of buying a house together in this old neighborhood. Climbing the stairs once or twice was fine, but doing it every day was tough, especially for Janine. Both Steven and Charles were thinking the same thing.
Suddenly, a thought crossed Charles’s mind. “Steven, I saw Skylar having dinner with some guy the other day. Do you think he could be her suitor?”
Steven was momentarily stunned. His gaze fell to the stairs ahead of him, and he thought for a moment. “Skye’s grown up. We should be prepared for things like this,” he said, his voice thoughtful.
