“Something urgent came up at the office, I need to head over there first. I’ll be home tonight,” Jeremy’s voice came through the phone, sounding distant and cold. A chill ran down Natalie’s spine, and her heart sank. The disappointment weighed heavily on her, and her eyes started to sting with unshed tears.
“Will you come home right after work tonight?” She asked, her voice wavering. Normally, she could joke and tease him, feeling completely at ease. But recently, there seemed to be a barrier between them, as though he was slipping away, and she couldn’t help but feel that he wasn’t as invested in her anymore.
“Yes. If nothing comes up, I’ll be home after work,” Jeremy replied, his voice softening, almost as if the idea of coming home was something he looked forward to.
Natalie wiped her tears, trying to hold back the emotions that were threatening to spill over. She didn’t understand why she was so upset. Business trips and work were normal, and she knew she couldn’t expect Jeremy to always be available, especially when his colleagues were around. Still, something felt different.
“Okay, I’ll wait for you,” she whispered before ending the call.
She stared at the lavish breakfast she had so carefully prepared for him. The thought that he might not even appreciate it made her feel even more disheartened. She couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that something was wrong between them.
“Could Jeremy be getting tired of me?” she thought. They hadn’t been intimate in a while. For a couple who had only been married just over a year, it seemed unusual to go one or two months without any intimacy.
Although Jeremy had been traveling a lot for work recently, there had been nights when he was home, yet he always seemed exhausted and would go to bed early. Natalie had tried to be understanding, knowing how demanding his job was, but now that the thought had entered her mind, it wasn’t so easy to ignore.
It was hard to reconcile the thought of him growing distant. They had known each other since childhood, and they were so familiar with one another. Despite the attention he received from various women, Jeremy had only ever had eyes for her. She bit her lip, trying to reassure herself. He was just overworked. That’s all.
Meanwhile, in the car, Victor Kirk glanced at the rearview mirror, his gaze inadvertently falling on Jeremy and Annabelle. They were sharing an intimate moment, completely oblivious to Victor’s presence.
Victor sighed inwardly. Natalie had no idea what was happening. He had been a silent witness to Jeremy and Natalie’s love story for years. He had seen how deeply Jeremy cared for Natalie, and how Natalie’s heart overflowed with love for him. Their relationship had always seemed perfect, but now, barely a year into their marriage, Jeremy seemed to be slipping away from her, entangled with Annabelle.
Victor couldn’t help but worry about what would happen if Natalie found out. She would be heartbroken, and it would shatter everything she believed about their relationship. But as Jeremy’s driver, he was bound to silence. He needed his job, and his family depended on him.
Annabelle was the type of woman who could easily captivate any man with her charm. If she ever entered the entertainment industry, she’d make a name for herself. But Victor had seen many women, even more beautiful than Annabelle, try to pursue Jeremy. So why had he given in to her?
Annabelle’s voice broke through his thoughts, “Come to my place. I want to cook lunch for you, Mr. Hughes. You haven’t tasted my cooking yet, right?” Her voice was soft and inviting, the kind of voice that could make any man’s heart flutter.
Jeremy frowned slightly, but under Annabelle’s expectant gaze, he agreed. “Okay.”
Annabelle’s face lit up, and she leaned in to kiss him on the lips. “I’ve never cooked for a man before. You’re the first! But my cooking isn’t that great. I hope you don’t mind.”
Jeremy’s eyes darkened at her words, but he said nothing as they continued on their way.
