Jeffrey’s patience was wearing thin, and it was clear that he was struggling to keep his temper in check. He found Skylar’s attitude utterly frustrating.
“Skylar, do you need help?” one of Skylar’s colleagues asked, noticing the tension in the air between her and the couple confronting her. Their disapproving behavior was hard to ignore.
Skylar smiled politely, appreciating their concern, though her expression was calm. “Thanks, but I’m fine,” she replied.
Turning back to Jeffrey and Sadie, she said coldly, “I don’t have a boyfriend. You’re wasting your time. Stop coming after me. I don’t want to see either of you again.”
Without waiting for a response, she walked around them, heading toward the office entrance.
“Wait!” Sadie shouted, trying to stop her. “Skye, we’re not that gullible. You don’t have to lie!”
Sadie’s voice was filled with frustration. She finally understood why Peter and Samuel had been so displeased after their last meeting with Skylar. It seemed to her that Skylar was treating them like fools—she hadn’t even bothered to come up with a more convincing lie.
Skylar stopped, turned back, and scoffed. “And what does that have to do with me?” she said, her voice sharp. “Stop following me, or I’ll call security.”
With that, she continued walking, unfazed.
Sadie reached out, her hand stretching in desperation, but Skylar was already too far ahead. Sadie’s arm hung in the air, her frustration mounting as she watched Skylar enter the building. Her face flushed red with anger as she turned to look at Jeffrey, who was equally grim-faced.
“She doesn’t care about us anymore, Jeff,” Sadie muttered bitterly. “She won’t tell us the truth. What should we do now?”
Jeffrey was silent for a moment, his mind racing. He had thought their daughter would be more cooperative. Instead, Skylar seemed to be hiding something.
Sadie’s voice dropped lower, almost conspiratorial. “From the way she’s acting, we can tell her ‘sugar daddy’ must be someone with a hidden identity. But who could it be?”
Her mind started working through the possibilities. A realization struck her, and her eyes widened in disbelief.
“What if…” she started, her voice trembling slightly, “What if it’s someone connected to Mr. Gardner Senior? We know he never lets anyone into his team without merit. But Skye got in. That means the person who helped her must be connected to him. Could it be his son? John?”
Jeffrey’s eyes flickered with recognition. “John Gardner…”
Sadie nodded, her thoughts rapidly falling into place. “Yes, Jeff. It might be him. He just got engaged recently, and now I’m starting to think he’s taken Skye in as his mistress after the engagement. No one can know about it—that must be why Skylar won’t tell us about him. It makes perfect sense.”
As Sadie spoke, her confidence grew, her suspicions now solidifying into a conviction. “Skye may not have anything particularly remarkable about her, but she’s attractive enough to catch the attention of someone like him.”
“Alright,” Jeffrey said, his tone determined. “Now that we know who it is, let’s find him. I’ll have a good conversation with John.”
Sadie’s eyes gleamed. “It would be best if he calls off his engagement and marries Skye. Then, he’ll be in a position to help us.”
“Agreed,” Jeffrey replied, already planning his next move. “I’ll get ready. Peter will come with me tomorrow when I meet John.”
As they were on their way home, Maisy called to check in on their progress. Sadie wasted no time in telling her everything she had deduced. The pieces were falling into place, and it seemed like they had a plan.
