Chapter 208
Sadie let her frustration explode, hurling accusations at Janine as if she were the root of all the Williams family’s problems.
In her mind, everything traced back to Janine. If Janine had raised Skylar properly, how could Skylar have ended up as someone’s mistress instead of living the life of the Williams family heiress?
Her venomous words struck Janine like a thunderclap.
“You don’t deserve to be Skye’s mother!” Janine snapped, eyes blazing. “Instead of defending her when people throw lies at her, you join the mob! Do you think everyone is as low and twisted as you?”
Sadie had stood with her arms folded, wearing an expression of smug superiority. But Janine’s words pierced through her like ice. Her hand suddenly shot up in rage, aiming for Janine’s face.
But Janine was quicker.
Smack!
A sharp slap rang out in the air.
Sadie staggered back, clutching her cheek, stunned. Even her oversized sunglasses couldn’t mask the look of utter disbelief spreading across her face.
“Janine, have you gone insane? How dare you hit me?” she shouted. “Believe it or not, I’ll tell Skylar what you did!”
Janine’s face was red with fury, her breathing heavy. She didn’t flinch.
“So what if I hit you?” she spat. “You think you’re a mother? You’re not even close!”
She took a step forward, her voice fierce with conviction.
“I used to hope Skye would treat you better because you’re her biological family. But now? I see that blood doesn’t mean a damn thing. You people—you’re lower than scum. Not worth a single shred of respect.”
Sadie, humiliated, tried to slap her back. But Janine sidestepped effortlessly, her reflexes sharp.
“Janine! You’re just a lowly worker. You think you can treat me like this?” Sadie shrieked, shaking with indignation.
To Sadie, Janine was nothing more than a servant—someone beneath notice, let alone respect. How could a woman like that have possibly raised a child like Skylar?
Janine scoffed. “I clean floors with pride. I live with dignity. Can you say the same about the Williams family’s dirty money? Don’t pretend you’re better than me—you haven’t earned that right.”
With that, she turned and began walking away.
To her, it was clear—they were from two completely different worlds. There would never be common ground between them.
But Sadie wasn’t done.
“Wait! Who said you could walk away?” she barked. “You haven’t told me who Skye’s man is!”
In her fury, Sadie had nearly forgotten the reason she came in the first place.
Janine slowly turned, raising her hand again as a warning.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Sadie snapped, stepping back instinctively. “I’ll report you! If you don’t tell me who Skylar is sleeping with, I’ll make sure you lose your job!”
Janine glared at her, voice steady and unwavering. “There is no man. I know my daughter. She’d never stoop to being anyone’s mistress. Skye earned her spot on Mr. Gardner Senior’s team through her own ability. She doesn’t need to depend on anyone.”
With that, she stepped into the elevator, letting the doors close in Sadie’s stunned face.
Sadie made a move to follow, but she halted when a familiar socialite stepped out of the elevator, forcing her to retreat. Frustrated and embarrassed, she ducked into a nearby café and sank into a seat.
Before she could even gather her thoughts, her phone buzzed.
It was Maisy.
“Mom, I just got off the plane,” Maisy said, her voice tight with anxiety.
Sadie leaned forward. “Did you talk to Mr. Martin? What did he say? Is he willing to help our family?”
To the Williams family, Joe Martin was their last hope in Jipsburg. They still had no clue who Skylar’s mysterious backer was and pinned everything on Maisy catching Joe’s attention.
Maisy paused, her throat dry. She couldn’t bring herself to tell her mother that Joe belonged to Skylar.
“Mom… I didn’t get to see him. He’s been busy. I waited, but I couldn’t approach him without making a scene. I’m sorry. It’s my fault,” Maisy said softly, guilt creeping into her voice.
Sadie exhaled sharply in frustration.
“Did you speak to Ms. Yancey, then? What did she say?” Maisy asked, gripping her phone tighter, anxiety written all over her voice.
There was silence on the other end for a moment. Sadie’s mind was spinning—but even now, neither of them knew just how far Skylar had come, or how far out of their reach she now was.
