Chapter 200
Paul couldn’t help but shiver, having not heard such an insincere voice in a long time. Reflexively, he turned his head to see who it was, and when he realized who had spoken, his surprise was palpable. Why was Maisy here?
Joe glanced over as well.
As soon as Maisy saw Joe looking at her, her face brightened, and she felt all the waiting had been worth it. She quickly approached, her high heels clicking loudly against the floor.
“Mr. Martin, what a coincidence,” she said, her tone dripping with sweetness.
Maisy had arrived at the hotel the previous night, but it had been too late to knock on Joe’s door, especially since he was staying in the presidential suite. She had waited until this morning, setting an alarm for 8:00 a.m., and now, hours later, she finally had her chance to see him.
By then, she had reapplied her makeup four or five times, hoping her efforts would pay off. And they did—Joe finally appeared.
A flicker of disdain crossed Joe’s cold eyes, which didn’t escape Paul’s attention. He could immediately tell that Joe disliked Maisy from the first moment he saw her. However, Maisy seemed completely oblivious to this clear aversion.
“Is there something you need, Ms. Williams?” Paul asked, his voice polite but firm.
Maisy, somewhat displeased, didn’t appreciate Paul interrupting. Couldn’t he see she was speaking to Joe? She smiled graciously, though, trying to maintain composure.
“I think it’s wonderful that we bumped into each other here. There have been some misunderstandings between us in the past, and I feel I should explain myself and clear the air. I’d also like to talk about Skylar,” Maisy said, her eyes glinting with an agenda.
Upon hearing this, Paul frowned. Was Maisy trying to stir up trouble again? Did she really think he hadn’t already done his homework on her and her family? He knew everything there was to know—and so did Joe. Maisy, however, remained blissfully unaware of this.
In her mind, she was the center of attention, the princess everyone revolved around. Her family, her parents, her brothers—all of them were bound to cater to her whims. And, she assumed, so would Joe. All she needed to do was try a little harder, and he would be eating out of her hand.
Joe, however, had no patience for this game.
“You handle it,” Joe said, his voice cold, before walking straight toward the elevator.
Maisy immediately wanted to stop him, but she couldn’t.
“Mr. Martin, Skylar has deceived you!” she called out anxiously.
She was certain Joe had heard her, but there was no response. His indifference only fueled her frustration.
After Joe entered the elevator, Paul turned to face Maisy. “You can just tell me whatever you want to say. What did Ms. Sullivan do to deceive my boss?”
Maisy bit her lip, feeling the sting of Paul’s indifference. Had Skylar bewitched Joe somehow? Why wouldn’t he listen to her? From the way Joe had shut her down, Maisy assumed that Skylar had been talking behind her back, spreading lies about her.
“Does Mr. Martin know that Skylar has a boyfriend?” Maisy asked, a slight smirk on her face as she tried to gauge Paul’s reaction.
Paul raised an eyebrow, intrigued. What exactly did Maisy think she knew? Previously, she had misunderstood him and Skylar. Now, it seemed, she was trying to implicate Joe.
“What does that have to do with anything?” Paul asked, keeping his tone deliberately vague.
“Of course it matters!” Maisy insisted, her voice tightening with impatience. “If Mr. Martin knows that Skylar has a boyfriend and still chooses to be with her, wouldn’t he be the third party in their relationship? If he doesn’t know, then Skylar has deceived him.”
Maisy paused, her expression growing more serious. “Even if Mr. Martin only sees Skylar as a casual lover, he still deserves to know the truth. And let’s not forget, Skylar is from the Williams family. If she’s behaving this way, it will bring shame to our family. It will embarrass us too.”
She looked at Paul with a frustrated frown. “If she offends Mr. Martin, we’ll suffer the consequences as well.”
