Suddenly, Natalie frowned. “Honey, why do I smell perfume on you?”
The scent was familiar, almost like she had smelled it just moments ago.
Jeremy pursed his lips. “Do I? It must be the perfume the secretary was wearing. We happened to be in the same elevator this morning.”
“There was a beautiful woman who just walked out. Is she your new secretary?” Natalie asked, not dwelling too much on it, but she couldn’t shake off the feeling of discomfort. She didn’t like the scent of the perfume.
If she wasn’t so confident that Jeremy only had eyes for her, she might have resented him for hiring a secretary who was more attractive than her.
Jeremy nodded indifferently. “Yeah.”
Seeing his lack of concern, Natalie decided not to read too much into it. She smiled and teasingly said, “Don’t be too aloof toward your employees, Mr. Hughes. What if you scare them away?”
Jeremy grinned, ruffling her hair fondly. “Isn’t it a good thing that I’m only gentle with you?”
Natalie laughed, her eyes twinkling. “Of course! I’m a jealous woman. I get green with envy easily. My husband is so handsome, I’m sure many women have their eyes on you.”
“Don’t worry. Even if others have their eyes on me, it’s useless,” Jeremy chuckled, his voice warm and reassuring.
Natalie’s heart swelled with joy at his words. “Same here. You can rest assured that many people pursue me, but I don’t fancy any of them. I only have eyes for you, Mr. Hughes.”
Jeremy’s expression softened, but he added with a teasing edge, “If anyone else pursues you, tell them you’re Mrs. Hughes and order them to scram.”
Seeing the trace of jealousy in his voice, Natalie giggled mischievously. “I’m just teasing you. I’ve already announced on my social media that I’m married. Who would dare pursue a married woman?”
Jeremy’s tense expression eased, and he couldn’t help but smile at her playful nature.
Later that evening, Skylar was on her way to Pearlhall Residence to keep Gloria company when she received a photo from an ex-classmate. Her classmate had been passing by Steven’s workplace when they saw something shocking—Christopher was blocking Steven’s way, kneeling before him in a desperate plea.
The photo was clear, showing Christopher’s stunned expression and his uncharacteristic display of humility. Skylar’s heart sank as she realized that Christopher had gone to pester Steven. She gripped the steering wheel tightly, taking a deep breath. Her mind was racing.
Without hesitation, she made a sharp U-turn, her decision made. The road was clear, and she arrived at Steven’s workplace in no time.
When she arrived, she found Steven standing calmly, unaffected by Christopher’s desperate pleas. The scene was a spectacle, with a crowd of onlookers who had gathered to watch the drama unfold.
“Help me, Steven. I beg you. Skylar and I have been together for so many years. We can’t just end our relationship like this,” Christopher pleaded, his voice full of desperation.
Steven remained unmoved, having already been listening to Christopher for nearly half an hour. Despite the presence of several classmates who had joined Christopher’s cause, Steven’s resolve didn’t waver.
“You can’t force matters of the heart,” Steven said firmly, his tone unyielding. “You and Skylar are no longer meant to be together. You didn’t cherish her when you had the chance. It’s too late to cry over it now.”
He glanced at the crowd, his eyes cold. “No matter how many people you bring or what you say, I will not change my mind. Skylar deserves better than you.”
Skylar, already married, had moved on from her past with Christopher. She had arranged for Steven to meet her brother-in-law soon, a chance for him to get to know the man who had truly become her family. After everything that Christopher had put Skylar through, Steven was determined to protect her—no matter what.
Christopher lowered his head, his eyes flashing with malice. His desperation was palpable.
“Don’t be so heartless,” a male ex-classmate interjected, trying to guilt-trip Steven. “Christopher and Skylar were the golden couple in school. Weren’t they about to get married? They shouldn’t break up over something trivial.”
Others in the crowd echoed similar sentiments, urging Steven to relent.
Skylar’s patience reached its limit. With brisk, determined steps, she walked over to the group.
