On the other end of the line, the woman paused for a few seconds before responding, her tone indifferent. “Okay, I’ll let Mr. Hughes know.”
After hanging up, Natalie frowned, her mind swirling with thoughts. “He didn’t tell me he’s changed his secretary,” she muttered.
Skylar, who had been listening quietly, noticed Natalie’s irritation and asked, “What’s wrong?”
Natalie forced a smile, trying to brush it off. “Oh, nothing. My husband’s in a meeting right now, so his secretary answered the phone. But it’s strange… I wonder why the previous secretary left. He was doing quite well. Oh well, it’s not really my concern.”
She waved off her thoughts before continuing. “It’s just a shame I couldn’t get the gossip right away. I’ll ask him about it tonight and tell you all about Joe and Annie’s story.”
“Okay, I’ll be waiting for your first-hand update,” Skylar replied with a smile, knowing that Natalie would certainly find a way to dig up all the details.
The two of them spent the rest of the afternoon shopping at the mall. Natalie bought plenty of items, and Skylar picked out some clothes, including a set for her adoptive mother, Janine. When they finished, they left the mall with their arms full of bags.
As they parted ways, Jeremy’s chauffeur arrived to pick up Natalie. Skylar waved her off and headed to the parking lot, planning to go home.
However, as she was waiting at a traffic light, she began to feel a little stuffy in the car, so she rolled down the window to get some fresh air. That’s when she noticed someone staring at her.
Turning her head to the side, she saw Joe, sitting in the car across the road. His gaze locked with hers, and there was a flicker of surprise in his eyes.
With the window rolled down, Skylar could also see Annie sitting next to him in the car. While Annie looked stunning on screen, in person, she was even more breathtaking. Her sharp features and confident posture made her look every bit like a woman from a prominent family.
Annie seemed to sense Joe’s gaze, as she quickly turned to look at Skylar. The exchange was brief but telling. It was clear that both women were aware of each other now.
Skylar, slightly taken aback by the intensity of the moment, quickly looked away, trying to act as though she hadn’t noticed anything. She didn’t want to make Annie suspicious, especially since Joe had been staring at her for quite a while as they waited for the light to turn green.
When the light finally changed, Skylar stepped on the accelerator and drove off, speeding away as if she were fleeing the scene. If it weren’t for the speed limits in town, she would have been long gone from that road.
After a few moments, Skylar found herself chuckling at her own reaction. She was his legal wife, yet seeing Joe with another woman made her feel guilty. But then again, it wasn’t exactly a typical marriage. It was a covert arrangement, and she was always careful to maintain distance.
Meanwhile, Caleb was making his way to his grandfather’s office. He rarely visited Alexander’s workplace, and lately, his grandfather had been busier than usual. Caleb had tried calling but couldn’t get through.
When he arrived, the staff greeted him warmly. They all knew Caleb well, and it seemed that Alexander was well-known among his team, too.
“Where’s my grandpa?” Caleb asked.
“Mr. Gardner Senior is resting on the sixth floor,” one of the team members replied.
Upon hearing that, Caleb immediately made his way to the elevator and headed up to the sixth floor, where the lounge area was located.
