“I already told you no last time. Our family’s company is struggling. I’ve been short on money for a while, and now it’s even worse. You’ll have to figure out another solution.”
Maisy’s patience had worn thin. She was getting increasingly frustrated with Christopher. She couldn’t believe she hadn’t seen just how troublesome he was before. He was constantly bothering her with trivial matters, calling her at all hours. It had become a nuisance.
When he heard the phone click as she hung up, Christopher felt his face burn with humiliation.
He had spent so much on Maisy, thinking she was his support in times of need. But now that he was facing difficulties, she had turned her back on him. The sting of betrayal cut deeper than he expected.
If only I had known…
I shouldn’t have betrayed Skylar. If I hadn’t betrayed her, she wouldn’t have left me for someone else.
Christopher couldn’t stop the flood of regret. But it was too late for that now. He had already lost her.
Paul doesn’t even compare to me, he thought bitterly. Skylar must’ve found out about Maisy and me, and left in a fit of anger. I can’t believe I let this happen.
Time was running out for him to fix things. Desperation started to rise within him. I’ll sell the old house. I have no other choice but to find Skylar again. I can’t live without her.
Meanwhile, Janine received a call from Amelia that caught her off guard. She had blocked Amelia’s number, but this time, she was calling from a different one.
The moment she answered, Amelia’s voice was filled with regret, and she began to cry.
“Janine… I’m so sorry. It was my fault,” Amelia said between sobs. “My health has been deteriorating for years, and it’s taken a toll on my mind. I’ve been selfish and inconsiderate. I deeply regret the things I said to you, and especially how I hurt Skylar’s feelings.”
Amelia’s voice quivered as she continued, “I’ve been reflecting on my actions, even consulting a doctor. My condition has been mostly psychological, and that’s why I couldn’t control myself and hurt others. You’ve known me for so long, you should know that I never intended to cause harm.”
She paused before adding, “I care about them both, Janine. The children have been together for so long, and their relationship is pure. We can’t let a few misunderstandings and my mistakes ruin that. I was wrong about Skylar. She’s a good person, and I regret everything I said about her.”
Amelia’s tone softened further, “Christopher truly loves Skylar. Their relationship was stable, and they were about to get married. This is all a misunderstanding. We can’t let it tear them apart. You know how much they’ve been through. The Williams family treated Skylar terribly, especially your own daughter. Maisy has been causing trouble, seducing Christopher and making life difficult for Skylar. I’m sure this time, it was her doing, trying to break them apart.”
Janine’s face hardened as she listened to Amelia speak. She had been hearing about Maisy’s actions for a while now, but hearing it from someone else made it hit home even harder.
A few days ago, Maisy had called her unusually, asking if Skylar would return to the Williams family. She had followed up by calling Skylar, and Skylar had gone back to them. But she never spoke of the mistreatment she endured—only shared happy stories, hiding her pain.
Janine felt a deep sense of guilt wash over her. I should’ve known. I should’ve been there for Skylar, and now she’s suffering because I didn’t act.
She hung up the phone abruptly, anger and frustration bubbling inside her. How could I have been so blind?
Just as she did, the front door creaked open. Harvey, who had overheard the conversation, rushed out the door in a panic.
“Harvey, where are you going?” Janine called after him.
“I’m going to find my sister!” Harvey shouted back, his voice full of urgency.
