Chapter 114
Joe glanced over immediately and saw Skylar helping Caleb to his feet.
“Ms. Sullivan seems to know the guy who fell off the motorcycle,” Paul commented.
Joe frowned, his eyes narrowing as he focused on Caleb, who was staring at Skylar. “Caleb?”
“Yeah. That’s really Mr. Alexander Senior’s grandson, Caleb,” Paul said, surprised.
Skylar knew who Caleb was? What were the odds?
Joe continued to watch Skylar. Her face was pale, likely from the shock of witnessing the accident. While she usually appeared brave, an accident seemed to have shaken her. She was still a woman with a delicate heart, after all.
“Should I go help Ms. Sullivan and Caleb?” Paul asked, ready to get out of the car.
Joe noticed that there were already plenty of people helping and realized he wouldn’t be much assistance. He withdrew his gaze from Skylar when Paul looked at him. “No need. Let’s head to the hospital.”
Paul remembered then that they were on their way to the hospital. Gloria had insisted that Joe have his regular health checks every two months due to his insomnia. With his schedule free that day, it was the perfect time to go.
Meanwhile, Caleb and Skylar were already in the ambulance with help from passersby. The traffic police had also towed Caleb’s bike.
Half an hour later, they arrived at the hospital. After a thorough check-up, the doctor confirmed that Caleb had fractured his left leg and would need surgery.
To make matters worse, he had an old injury on that leg, which this accident had aggravated. There was no avoiding a hospital stay.
Caleb wasn’t thrilled about being hospitalized. “Is it really that bad? I don’t want to stay here. Can’t I just get a cast and go home?”
Skylar glanced at the doctor’s annoyed expression and said, “Listen to the doctor. Unless you want to give up on riding bikes.”
The doctor looked at Skylar and said, “Are you the patient’s family? Please pay at the counter first.”
Skylar nodded. “Alright, I’ll take care of it now.”
Caleb blushed. Did Skylar just admit she was his family? He didn’t expect her to say that, but there it was.
A few minutes later, Skylar returned to the hospital room. Caleb was still blushing. “How much was it? I’ll transfer the money to you.”
Skylar glanced at the receipt. “Pay me back once you get your salary. You should let your parents know about your surgery so they can take care of you. They’ll need to sign for it, too.”
Caleb shifted uncomfortably. “My parents can’t make it. My grandpa won’t be able to come either. I could ask Uncle John, but he’s busy.” Caleb’s eyes darted around as he tried to think of a plan.
He still hadn’t figured out how to tell Skylar about his connection to Alexander, so he couldn’t let Alexander come. His Uncle John was his only option. Besides, this situation could work to his advantage—getting sympathy from Skylar with no family around.
Skylar noticed Caleb’s unease. She recalled that he had dropped out of high school, likely due to personal reasons. “Then have your Uncle John sign for the surgery. I’ll bring you food whenever I’m available. If you need anything, just ask the nurse to contact me.”
Caleb’s eyes lit up at the mention of food. Was he finally going to get a taste of Skylar’s home-cooked meals?
Skylar checked the time. “You still have a test result that hasn’t come back. It should be available now. I’ll go pick it up.”
Caleb looked at her, filled with gratitude. “Skylar, you really are amazing.”
