Amelia still needed surgery if she hoped to live a long life, and their savings were nearly gone. There was simply no way they could repay Skylar.
Skylar was so cruel.
Amelia clung to Christopher’s arm, trying to hurry him away from the scene, but the resentment in Christopher’s eyes was clear. His face was pale as he glared at Joe.
“Mr. Martin, are you really going to keep a homewrecker by your side?” Christopher spat, his voice dripping with bitterness.
“Why? Do you think you can take my place?” he continued. “Who do you think you are? You’re nothing compared to me.”
Paul rolled his eyes, clearly unimpressed. “Not everybody can handle this job,” he muttered to himself. “I worked hard to become Joe’s assistant. Not like you. You don’t even belong in the same conversation.”
Paul wasn’t about to let someone as useless as Christopher try to step into his shoes.
Christopher’s face turned even paler. When his eyes flicked to Skylar, the coldness in her gaze was unmistakable. It was clear she saw him as nothing more than an enemy.
A sinking feeling settled in his chest. Skylar truly hated him. She was done with him.
“Skye, let’s go somewhere quiet and talk this through, okay?” Christopher pleaded, desperation creeping into his voice.
“There’s no need for that. Just stay out of my life,” Skylar replied, her tone emotionless. She gripped the medical report tightly in her hand and walked away without looking back.
As she passed Joe, she paused for a brief moment and then turned to face Paul. “Thanks,” she said, her voice softer than before.
“Uh, you’re welcome,” Paul replied, surprised by her gratitude.
Christopher tried to go after Skylar, but Amelia held him back, her grip tight on his arm.
“Do you really want to give all that money back?” she asked softly, her voice laced with caution.
She watched his face carefully before adding, “If you can’t let her go, just give her some time to cool off. Then you can talk to her.”
“She used to love me so much. This must all be a huge misunderstanding,” Christopher muttered through gritted teeth, frustration evident in his voice.
Joe, who had been watching the exchange, shot Christopher a cold glance before turning and walking away.
As Paul passed by, he scoffed. “Love? He’s delusional. He can’t be serious.”
Later, in the car:
Paul couldn’t help but voice his opinion again. “Christopher is shameless,” he said with disdain.
Joe, leaning back in the seat, lit a cigarette and rolled down the window. After taking a few slow drags, he exhaled and then said, “I don’t want to see Christopher in this city again. Make it happen.”
Paul’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. “You mean…?”
Joe didn’t need to elaborate. Paul understood exactly what Joe meant.
Christopher wouldn’t be able to get hired by any company in Jipsburg City. It was clear that Joe’s power and influence were vast enough to make Christopher’s life here impossible. It was a form of revenge—one that would cost Christopher everything.
Paul had already figured out Joe’s secret. He seemed to care about Skylar in ways that went beyond what anyone could see on the surface. This was Joe’s way of exacting retribution for all the harm Christopher had caused her.
When Skylar left the hospital, John had already arrived.
