“Ms. Silver, how do you know Skylar? Do you know who her sugar daddy is?” Maisy’s throat went dry as she suddenly realized she hadn’t asked the most pressing question.
Her entire family was desperate to uncover the identity of Skylar’s benefactor. Unfortunately, after several days of investigating, they still had no clue.
Annie smiled faintly. “I’ve only met Ms. Sullivan once. I don’t know much about her.”
Despite how much Annie disliked Skylar, she was clear on one thing—Joe hadn’t publicly acknowledged his relationship with Skylar. Even if Skylar and Joe had been involved intimately, they could only be considered to have had a fling. And this wasn’t something Annie could afford to disclose. She wouldn’t want to explain herself to Joe if the truth got out later.
“I suddenly remembered something I need to attend to, Ms. Williams. I’ll be on my way,” Annie said, picking up her bag and standing up.
Maisy was astonished. “Where did you meet her, Ms. Silver? Did she approach you?”
Up until now, no matter what Annie asked, Maisy answered everything except Skylar’s real identity. She had even shared the fact that Skylar had a boyfriend. So why, when the tables were turned, did Annie refuse to answer her question? Why did it seem like Annie knew something about Skylar’s benefactor?
Annie’s expression turned slightly cold. With a clear sense of distance, she said, “Sorry, that’s all in the past. I can’t recall where we met. It was nice chatting with you. Perhaps we’ll meet again in the future.”
“Wait. Let’s exchange WhatsApp contacts. That way, we can chat directly whenever needed,” Maisy said, pulling out her phone and opening WhatsApp, eager to add Annie.
But Annie remained still, shaking her head. “Let’s save it for the next time we meet. Goodbye.”
Even Maisy, in her confusion, could see that Annie had no intention of meeting her again. She felt a wave of embarrassment wash over her. “How does Annie know Skylar?”
Maisy remembered that Annie had been the one to initiate adding Skylar on WhatsApp. However, Skylar hadn’t seemed particularly eager to reciprocate. But when it came to her, Annie had refused to share her contact.
The thought of everyone treating Skylar so specially only deepened Maisy’s discomfort. She clenched her teeth tightly, trying to push back her frustration.
In the end, she realized it didn’t matter. To the Williams family, she was the queen. Skylar had no standing at all.
Meanwhile, Caleb lay on his hospital bed, playing with his phone. He was bored out of his mind. After surgery on his leg, he wouldn’t be discharged until the next day. But even then, he wouldn’t be able to walk for about three months—let alone ride a motorcycle or engage in any extreme sports.
He glanced at the time. There was still an hour left before Skylar got off work.
His boredom only increased his longing for Skylar. Just as he was absorbed in a game, his phone rang.
“Uncle John,” Caleb answered.
“Caleb, I heard from Grandpa that you like Skylar. She’s working with him, right?” John’s voice crackled through the line.
Caleb rolled his eyes. “Why does Grandpa feel the need to broadcast every detail to the world? Uncle John, if you’re so interested in managing kids, maybe you should start a family of your own. Stop meddling in my affairs. Grandpa has agreed to this, so leave me alone. Skylar’s great.”
“You can’t have her. Just forget about her. While there’s not much emotional attachment yet, you should find someone else to like,” John advised sternly.
“Why can’t I?” Caleb shot back. “Did Grandpa tell you she’s a few years older than me? So what? I look more mature than her, anyway. People would think I’m older than her by a few years just by looks. Just leave me alone, Uncle John.”
Caleb’s voice was resolute. “Nowadays, it’s all about free love. I’m not interested in a transactional marriage.”
John could only sigh, realizing Caleb was set on doing things his own way.
