Chapter 146
“Harvey, you don’t even know where your sister works. Hurry up and review your lessons. You’re going back to school tomorrow. Come back now!” Janine called from the balcony. She opened the window and shouted at her son, who had already dashed downstairs.
Harvey waved back at her. “Trust me, I’ve never liked cramming at the last minute. Skylar’s been bullied, and you didn’t even tell me! I’m worried about her, and I need to see her. I’m grown up now, so don’t worry!”
Janine knew Harvey well—once his mind was made up, nothing could stop him. He was determined, and there was no changing that.
She sighed, knowing full well she couldn’t stop him, but also wishing he’d be more responsible with his time.
After hanging up the phone, Amelia’s expression darkened.
“Christopher, I think Janine and her family have made up their minds not to let Skylar be with you. Given the situation, we should just go to her directly.”
Amelia’s words were heavy with frustration. If Skylar hadn’t seemed so useful to her, she would never have lowered herself to beg Janine for help. It was hard for her to understand why Skylar, who was once so important to her son, had been so readily discarded.
She also felt a bitter resentment toward Janine. Why is she so much better off, with her family intact and no husband, yet she lives better than all of us? The more she thought about it, the more unfair it seemed.
“No, Mom, I can’t live without Skylar.” Christopher’s voice was shaky with despair. He ruffled his already messy hair in frustration, his face showing the clear toll his recent struggles had taken on him. He had lost weight in the last few days, his anxiety growing with each passing moment.
Amelia looked at her son, her heart aching. “With your qualifications, you could have any woman you want, Christopher. Why are you still chasing after Skylar? She’s no longer the woman you once knew. She’s changed… she’s with someone else now. Why bother?”
Christopher’s eyes grew red, and his hands trembled with emotion. “Mom, stop talking about her like that!”
Amelia blinked, startled by his outburst. She knew her son was deeply hurt, and her own words had hit a sore spot. Despite everything, Christopher had always been good to her, but when it came to Skylar, his anger flared, and his emotions overtook him.
She realized then how much her son truly cared about Skylar, and it saddened her even more. If she had known this would happen, she would’ve tried harder to mend things between them before. Instead, her cruel remarks had only driven them further apart.
Christopher’s voice dropped, filled with regret. “She wouldn’t have become so cold-hearted for no reason. She must have seen me with Maisy, which is why she didn’t believe all the clarifications online. I should’ve figured that out earlier.”
He looked down, guilt evident in his expression. “I should’ve realized that before I let her slip away.”
Meanwhile, at the Williams Group, the atmosphere was far from calm. Jeffrey and Peter were bombarded with calls, each one about a partnership that had been previously agreed upon, only to be canceled without explanation.
The disruption was overwhelming, and it was clear that something much bigger was at play.
