Chapter 184
The four of them were escorted out of the Gardner Group building in disgrace. The security captain, with a stern face, warned them one last time not to return. He made it clear that if any of them were spotted at the entrance again, the security would not hesitate to involve the police.
The thought of such an incident making it to the media was enough to make the Williams family’s reputation in Jipsburg crumble.
With their tails between their legs, they returned to the car.
Peter, sitting in the driver’s seat, pounded the steering wheel with frustration. He had always been the one in control, getting his way with ease, but lately, it seemed like he had been humiliated at every turn. Today, even a mere security captain had threatened him without hesitation.
“What’s wrong with those people? I laid everything out so clearly, but they still defend Skylar. She must have been buttering them up somehow,” Maisy fumed, her voice thick with anger.
In her frustration, she momentarily forgot to mask her emotions, revealing the deep resentment she felt.
Samuel, glancing at her, was taken aback by the intensity in her eyes. She had always been the kind, timid one, but now she looked as if she could kill Skylar with just a glance. The change was startling.
“It’s no use trying to get anything out of Skylar,” Kenny sighed, his voice resigned. “Let’s have someone else investigate.”
He checked the time and then added, “I’ve got to go to work. I’ll talk to Steven again later and see if he knows anything.”
Maisy’s eyes lit up with a new idea. “I know someone who might know something. I’ll go find her.”
She suddenly remembered Annie. The last time they met, Annie had asked her all sorts of questions about Skylar. At the time, Maisy hadn’t thought much of it, but now it seemed clear that Annie might know who was supporting Skylar financially.
She hadn’t realized it at the time, but now it was obvious. Annie might have manipulated her into doing her bidding. Of course, Maisy wouldn’t let herself be used like that. She was determined to find out more and take control of the situation.
Caleb had just returned home after being discharged from the hospital. He lay lazily on his bed, flipping through TV channels or scrolling through his phone. Occasionally, he would read the thick books his grandfather had thrown at him, but it was all rather boring.
He wanted to see Skylar, but he couldn’t just ask her to come over. She still didn’t know that he was Alexander’s grandson.
He had never liked or missed anyone this much before.
Feeling restless, Caleb called Alexander. “Grandpa, what’s Skylar busy with? Did you give her too much work? She’s been ignoring my WhatsApp messages!”
Alexander’s frown deepened as he replied, “You’re not good enough for Skylar. Stop daydreaming about dating her, and don’t bother her. Look at those superficial WhatsApp messages you’re sending. Skylar is busy with work and doesn’t have time to chat with you. You two are from completely different worlds. Don’t force it.”
Caleb couldn’t believe his ears. “Are you really my grandpa? Did you get replaced by a body snatcher? I thought you wanted Skylar to be your granddaughter-in-law! I’ve just had surgery. I’m not crippled for life. Why do you have to kick me when I’m down?”
“You’re not hearing me,” Alexander said sternly. “You’d better get rid of any improper thoughts. It’s impossible for you and Skylar to be together.”
Without giving Caleb a chance to respond, Alexander hung up.
Caleb gritted his teeth in frustration. He had never felt this disrespected by his grandfather before. It was as though Alexander looked down on him more than ever.
He glanced at the book beside him, his hands clenching in anger. “I’ll prove myself. I will become worthy of Skylar.”
Later, after finishing work, Skylar went to Pearlhall Residence to have dinner with Gloria before returning to Galaxy. As soon as she arrived, she saw a message from Joe on WhatsApp: he would be on a business trip for the next two days.
She sighed in relief, recalling the embarrassing incident earlier that morning. At least she didn’t have to face him today.
Skylar quickly responded, “Okay. Don’t worry about Grandma. I’ll visit her these two days.”
Joe replied, “Sure. Just don’t drink with anyone while I’m gone.”
Skylar’s face flushed with embarrassment. The word “drink” made her cringe, and she couldn’t help but feel mortified. A quiet scream of frustration echoed in her mind. She suddenly felt like Joe had some sort of leverage over her.
