Christopher was determined to destroy Paul at all costs.
Just when Skylar thought she had seen it all, Christopher managed to lower the bar even further. His audacity knew no bounds.
Paul was exasperated. “You shamelessly mess around with other women and the fake heiress from the Williams family, and now you’re accusing me and Ms. Sullivan? Since you’re here at the hospital, maybe you should see a specialist?”
Skylar walked up to him, unable to hold back her disgust any longer. “Christopher, I always knew you were shameless, but I didn’t expect you to go this low.”
With those words, she slapped him.
It was something she had wanted to do for a long time. All the lies, all the manipulations, all the time she had wasted—seven years of her life—she could no longer hold back the anger that had built up over the years.
Joe’s gaze turned icy as he watched the exchange. He stood there, like a king looking down at an insignificant ant. His silence was commanding enough, and yet the presence he exuded was undeniable.
Christopher, stunned by the slap, staggered back. “Did you just slap me for that guy? Skylar, you’ve changed!”
“Are you insane? Did you just hit my son?” Amelia screeched, her voice shrill with fury. “Did you think Christopher actually liked you? You were the one clinging to him. That’s why he had no choice but to be with you. You think you’re so noble? Even your own parents don’t want you. You’re just a country girl. How dare you slap Christopher? You deserve nothing but misery!”
Amelia’s outburst was filled with vitriol, and her face twisted with rage. She looked like she might collapse from the intensity of her anger. If she had the strength, she would’ve lunged at Skylar and ripped her apart.
Skylar’s voice cut through the tension. “Ask your son to stay away from me. And if both of you are so innocent and above it all, why don’t you give back every cent you took from me?”
Skylar took a deep breath, her face turning paler than before. Her words were laced with coldness. “I used to think I was helping the needy, doing a good deed. After all, even a dog knows how to be grateful to its owner. Now, I feel nothing but disgusted by both of you.”
She couldn’t help but feel exposed in that moment. It bothered her more than she expected that Joe was seeing her like this—vulnerable, hurt, raw. It felt as if everything she had kept hidden was now on display.
Amelia had been sick. Skylar had spent more time taking care of her than Christopher ever did, yet the only thing she had gotten in return was insults and ridicule, not gratitude.
Humanity could be so ugly.
By now, a crowd had gathered around, as it was a hospital and the scene had escalated quickly. Some patients, recognizing Amelia, began to whisper among themselves.
“I can’t stand her either. Every time she shows up, she acts so helpless and makes that poor girl do everything for her.”
“And once she leaves, she’s back to badmouthing her. She calls her a fool for liking her son, even says she should be pleased with her son or he’ll break up with her!”
“She’s so sweet. If she weren’t so devoted to her son, I would have taken her for my own daughter-in-law.”
“It’s unbearable. Just unbearable.”
The murmurs were soft, but they were audible enough for everyone to hear. Skylar didn’t say anything. She let the whispers wash over her, knowing they were all truths no one dared say to Amelia and Christopher’s faces.
Joe turned to Skylar, his expression unreadable. Then he leaned in to whisper to Paul.
“Ms. Sullivan,” Paul said quietly, “Would you like me to find you a lawyer? I can make sure they return every penny they took from you.”
Paul’s words were calm, but his disgust for the audacity of Amelia and Christopher was evident. What a shameless family.
Amelia’s face turned pale at the mention of lawyers and the possibility of having to return every cent. Panic began to set in. “You can’t treat us like this! You gave us that money of your own free will!” she shrieked. “Christopher, let’s go. Even if she regrets it and begs you, don’t forgive her.”
