Chapter 190
Outside the TV station building, Annie’s car had just pulled out of the parking lot when suddenly, someone appeared in her path, blocking it. She slammed on the brakes, her expression changing instantly. Where had this person come from? She hadn’t noticed them at all.
Annie had been feeling restless for the past few days. Not only was she absent-minded, but she had also made several mistakes at work. Now, she had almost hit someone!
If she had rammed into someone right at the entrance of the TV station, her career could be over. Cold sweat broke out on her back as she took a deep breath, trying to calm the restlessness that had taken hold of her.
With a concerned expression, she quickly got out of the car. “Are you okay? Do you need me to take you to the hospital? I’m so sorry. You were in my blind spot, and I didn’t see you.”
Maisy hadn’t expected Annie to almost hit her. She was just as startled by the incident as Annie was. She replied, “I think I twisted my ankle, but I’m not hurt anywhere else.”
“Maisy?” Annie’s face darkened as she recognized the woman in front of her. Her expression turned cold.
Maisy had been about to smile, but as soon as she saw Annie’s sullen look, she understood. Annie had tried to get information about Skylar through her, but once Maisy had given her what she wanted, Annie had completely cut her off.
Now that they were face-to-face again, Annie made no effort to hide her displeasure. She was clearly irritated and saw Maisy as someone beneath her.
“So, you remember me after all,” Maisy said, her tone sharp. “I thought after our last conversation, you’d have forgotten all about me. I wonder, though, are you satisfied with the information you got about Skylar? You’re so curious about her—could it be because you know the man who’s backing her?”
Annie’s expression grew even colder, and she maintained a haughty demeanor. “What do you want?” she asked, her voice dripping with disdain.
Maisy patted the nonexistent dust off her skirt. “Nothing really. Since we clearly can’t be friends, I’m not here to befriend you. I just want to know who Skylar was looking for and the identity of that man.”
Annie’s face darkened immediately. These past couple of days, things at home had been a mess. Even when she tried calling Rowan, he’d come up with excuses not to talk to her. The more she thought about it, the more she regretted her actions and blamed herself for the mess she’d made. She had let her emotions get the best of her, and now, everything was spiraling out of control.
She couldn’t afford to make another mistake.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Annie replied indifferently. “I’m not familiar with Ms. Sullivan.”
Her mind raced, worried about what could happen if Joe found out she was gossiping about Skylar with someone from the Williams family. The consequences would be unbearable.
Maisy didn’t back down. “Don’t lie to me, Ms. Silver. I’m not a child.”
Annie glared at Maisy, her patience wearing thin. “The Williams family has been facing a lot of trouble lately. If you don’t want to make things worse for yourself, don’t pester me for information.”
With that, she opened the car door and slid back inside.
Maisy, not ready to let go, tapped the window angrily. “There aren’t many people in Jipsburg who can make you shut up, are there? You asked me about Skylar because you like the man she’s seeing, don’t you? Who’s the guy you’re into?”
She trailed off mid-sentence, her eyes suddenly widening in realization. Her expression soured, and her disbelief was evident.
Annie, now wearing a pair of sunglasses, concealed the mocking look in her eyes. She knew Maisy had figured something out. If Maisy made a scene, it would only divert Joe’s attention toward the Williams family, which was exactly what Annie wanted.
