Caleb couldn’t imagine falling in love with anyone else in his life. He had made up his mind to keep loving Skylar, and only her.
Skylar smiled softly. “Rest well.”
While she went off to pay the bills, Caleb called John. After the call ended, he leaned back against the hospital bed. Despite the sharp pain in his leg, he felt strangely at peace.
Skylar picked up the medical report and was about to head back to see the doctor when she heard a voice.
“Skye?”
“It really is you, Skye!”
The voices were unmistakable. As Skylar lifted her gaze, her expression turned cold.
It was Christopher and Amelia.
Christopher rushed over to her. “Skye, did you come to visit my mom? Have you finally forgiven us?”
“Skye, are you here to see me? I’ve missed you,” Amelia added, her tone seemingly sweet, but there was a subtle undercurrent of hidden resentment.
Skylar remained silent for a moment, taking in the sight of them both. Christopher’s words made her uneasy.
Christopher continued, “Skye, can we go back to how things were? We’ve been through so much together. Please trust me. Why don’t we get married? I’ll belong to you and only you.”
He wasn’t pretending. In the past few weeks, he had been reminiscing about their high school days when their love had seemed perfect, pure. For reasons he couldn’t fully explain, he had strayed and fallen for Maisy. But now, he realized he had made a mistake.
Amelia chimed in, her eyes tearing up dramatically. “Skye, it was all a misunderstanding. I’ve talked to Christopher. He won’t let other women near him anymore. There won’t be any more inappropriate photos spreading out either.”
Her performance was flawless, a perfect display of feigned innocence.
Meanwhile, not far away, Joe observed the scene unfolding with a distant look and a faint smile tugging at his lips.
Paul’s eyes widened. “Isn’t that Christopher? Ms. Sullivan’s ex-boyfriend?” he asked in surprise.
It seemed like they hadn’t broken up after all.
Skylar was facing away from them, so they couldn’t see her reaction, but they could hear Christopher’s desperate plea. Was he proposing?
From his previous research, Paul knew that Skylar and Christopher had a long history together, high school sweethearts with an innocent, pure love. He glanced at Joe to gauge his reaction.
Joe’s expression was unreadable, his focus still on Skylar. For some reason, Paul noticed a hint of annoyance in Joe’s eyes, though he didn’t seem to care much about the situation.
Skylar took a deep breath before finally speaking. “I think it’s too late for that, Christopher.”
Her voice was steady, but there was an underlying firmness to it. She didn’t want to go back to the past, to the person who had betrayed her trust.
Christopher’s face fell. He reached for her hand, but Skylar pulled it away gently. “We can’t go back, not after everything.”
Amelia’s expression hardened, and for a moment, Skylar could see the venom in her gaze. But she quickly masked it with a forced smile, stepping closer to her husband. “Skye, you’ve always been so understanding. Just this once, give him another chance. He’s truly sorry.”
Skylar shook her head. “It’s not about forgiveness, Amelia. It’s about trust. And once trust is broken, there’s no going back.”
Amelia’s tears dried as she turned to Christopher, who now stood silent, regret etched in his features.
Skylar turned to walk away, her heart heavy, but resolute. She had been through too much to let herself be pulled back into a toxic relationship. Behind her, she could hear Christopher’s voice, but it grew fainter as she put distance between them.
As Skylar walked down the hallway, she couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions—relief that she had made the right choice, but also sadness for the love that had once been. Yet, her thoughts quickly shifted back to Caleb. She wanted to focus on the present, on what lay ahead, and not be haunted by the past.
