Peter and Samuel exchanged glances before turning their attention to Kenny.
Kenny, Skylar doesn’t hold any real significance to us. Whether she’s our sister or not doesn’t matter. Her being swapped at birth was her misfortune. She’s unrelated to us, Peter said coldly.
But if she’s really teamed up with outsiders to go against our family’s company, then she’s ungrateful. After all, she had a good life when she was with us, he added, his tone harsh.
Samuel scoffed. I’ve said it before: I only have one sister, and that’s Maisy. I don’t care how Skylar feels about us. If killing were legal, I’d strangle her right now.
Kenny frowned, realizing the deep-rooted resentment his brothers still held for Skylar. He remembered their parents’ and Maisy’s behavior from earlier when they left home. It was clear they still blamed Skylar for everything, expecting her to obey them, to fit into their world. They never saw her as an individual with her own life to live.
Kenny pressed his lips together, his voice firm. But can’t Skylar feel the same way too? She used to treat us like family, but now she probably sees us as enemies. Do you really think she’ll still listen to you guys?
Peter and Samuel were taken aback by his question, but their expressions soon hardened.
It doesn’t matter how she sees us. She still has the Williams blood in her veins, Peter said coldly, as though that alone gave them ownership over her.
Samuel snorted, unimpressed. She’s living a good life now. Look at where she’s working—Mr. Gardner Senior’s team. Our family might not even be able to get her in if we tried.
Kenny didn’t respond. It seemed pointless to continue the conversation. Deep down, he just hoped things wouldn’t turn out the way he feared. He still clung to the hope that Skylar, despite everything, still cared about them—the brothers who once protected her.
At the Williams residence, Sadie sat uneasily in the living room, her fingers nervously tapping on her phone as she checked the time.
Your brothers should’ve arrived by now. I wonder how their talk with Skylar is going. How did Skylar become like this? She’s despicable if she really got someone to target our family’s company, Sadie muttered, her concern growing.
Maisy, who hadn’t been feeling well these past few days and had stayed home, could barely calm her nerves. She wished she could join them to find out who Skylar’s mysterious backer was.
Mom, is our company really in that much trouble? Maisy asked, her voice tinged with anxiety.
Sadie sighed, looking weary. Jeffrey said the company is facing bankruptcy. He’s hired someone to investigate who’s behind Skylar, but there’s no clear answer yet. This could be tied to Rowan and his group.
Rowan? Maisy’s eyes lit up. She knew Rowan, a figure who, along with Joe and John, was part of an influential circle in Jipsburg—a circle far beyond the Williams family’s reach.
Yeah, but it probably isn’t Rowan. His women are always in the news, and John’s engaged. We need to figure out who it is first before we can solve this. Our company can’t go bankrupt—it’s your dad’s years of hard work, Sadie said, frowning, clearly troubled.
She felt a sense of discomfort about Skylar’s coldness toward her, and her unanswered calls weighed heavily on her.
Maisy, lost in thought, suggested, Mom, I think I’ll go check things out myself. I have a feeling they can’t handle this. Maybe if I talk to Skylar in person, I can find out who’s behind all of this.
Sadie hesitated, then nodded. Alright then, but be careful.
Meanwhile, at work, Skylar had just clocked in when she was informed that Alexander wanted to see her. She made her way to his office and found him on the phone.
“I’m too old for these extremely complex and delicate repairs. I probably can’t do them anymore, but there’s a young person in my team who might be able to,” Alexander said, finishing his call as Skylar entered.
