Chapter 159
Many people experienced warmth within their families, and Skylar’s was no different. Though her family wasn’t wealthy, they never lacked the good things in life, and love was always abundant.
Joe listened intently to Skylar’s story, his curiosity growing with each word. “You enjoyed fighting when you were young?” he asked, a hint of amusement in his tone.
Skylar’s face flushed with embarrassment. “You’ve seen me fight a few times, but those were exceptional circumstances. Kenny and Maisy provoked me first.”
She paused, recalling her past. “I used to hope I could be part of their family. I tried to endure, to keep the peace. But now, they’re worthless in my eyes. If I don’t take action, they’ll just get more audacious.”
If it weren’t for the law, Skylar would have done far worse. Her past life had left her with a deep resentment for the Williams family.
Joe picked up on the bitterness in her voice. He smirked slightly. “They’re definitely asking for trouble, bullying you like that. They’ll be bankrupt in no time. Is that what you want?”
Skylar didn’t hesitate. “Of course, that’s what I want,” she admitted, her tone blunt and unrepentant. She could never forgive the Williams family.
Skylar had made her intentions clear from the start of their marriage. She wanted Joe to sever ties with the Williams family, to stop any cooperation or assistance that had been provided. She was waiting for their downfall—the taste of retribution she believed they deserved.
Joe gave a faint smile. “Alright.”
Skylar was surprised at how talkative Joe had been that night. She couldn’t help but wonder if he was thinking about terminating their arrangement early. Maybe that’s why he seemed so agreeable—so that once the divorce came, there would be no lingering worries between them.
“Mr. Martin, I’d like to discuss something with you,” Skylar said, her tone formal.
Joe’s brow furrowed slightly at the mention of “Mr. Martin.” “Alright, go ahead,” he replied.
“I haven’t told my family about our secret marriage. My big brother noticed something odd the last time we met, so I had to tell him that I’m married. He’s been eager to meet my husband, but I know you can’t meet him. So, I plan to hire someone online to act as a stand-in,” Skylar explained.
With the internet, it would be easy to find someone who could play the role convincingly. As long as the actor was good enough, Steven would never suspect anything.
Joe’s frown deepened as he processed what Skylar had said. She couldn’t quite gauge his thoughts at that moment.
“If he wants to meet me, you can arrange a time. Our marriage just needs to be kept secret from the media,” Joe said, his voice low and calm.
Skylar blinked, caught off guard by his response. “Really?”
Joe nodded.
She never expected things to go so smoothly. Joe was surprisingly easy to talk to tonight.
“Do you need me to help massage your head?” Skylar asked, her tone soft and considerate.
Joe had intended to ask Skylar for a massage earlier, but he had refused her offer last time, knowing she would likely reject him now. But hearing her offer this time made him feel a strange joy. “Sure, thank you.”
Skylar grabbed an extra pillow and placed it on her lap. “Lie down here.”
Joe glanced at her, then at the pillow she had positioned for him. There was a brief flicker of something in his eyes, an emotion he quickly suppressed.
As Skylar gently massaged his head, Joe found himself falling asleep. His body relaxed under her touch, and soon he drifted into a dreamless sleep.
When Joe woke up, it was already 6:00 AM the next day. He blinked, feeling slightly disoriented, as if he had just woken up from a deep, dreamless slumber.
His gaze landed on Skylar, who was still sleeping peacefully beside him. A soft smile played on her face, making the moment feel almost surreal.
